Hello –
I will be hiring a postdoc to work on water isotopes/tracers within the DOE Climate Model, E3SM, and their application to understanding coastal/urban settings. The official job advertisement is available here: https://lanl.jobs/search/jobdetails/earth-system-modeling-postdoc/e6ee342f-7947-49ea-85cf-357e3c559df7 (IRC 125312), and job description is also included below.

This position will not require a security clearance (I am working on getting the posting corrected); applications from foreign nationals eligible for work authorization in the US will be considered. I would encourage anyone meeting the minimum requirements to apply, note that no candidate is expected to have all the desired qualifications.

Thanks!
Rich

Earth System Modeling Postdoc

What you will do
Put your expertise in Earth system science, high performance computing, urban or coastal environments, or environmental tracer methods to good use by joining our world-class R&D team! The Climate, Ecosystems, and Environmental Science Group in the Earth and Environmental Sciences (EES) Division at Los Alamos National Laboratory (LANL) has an immediate opening for a postdoctoral research associate with experience in Earth system modeling and/or water isotope ratio data synthesis. You will work as part of a team working on implementing water isotope ratio tracers in the atmospheric, land, and river model components of the Department of Energy’s Energy Exascale Earth System Model (E3SM). These tracers will be used to understand hydrological processes in coastal and urban settings and improve representation of these processes in E3SM. You will be expected to publish results in high-impact peer-reviewed journals and present your work at conferences. The term of the appointment is two (2) years, with the option to extend to a third year depending on performance and funding availability.

Minimum Requirements:
Ph.D. in a STEM field
Record of publishing in peer-reviewed journals
Strong communication skills as evidenced and presentations at national or international conferences
Motivation to succeed in an independent work environment and interact with a multidisciplinary, integrated team.
1 year research experience with atmosphere, land surface, and/or coupled Earth system models

Education: Candidates must have received a Ph.D. within the last five years in a STEM field, or will have completed all Ph.D. requirements by commencement of appointment.

Desired Qualifications:
Ph.D. in an Earth sciences field
2+ years research experience with high performance computing
2+ years research experience with atmosphere, land surface, and/or coupled Earth system models
2+ years programming experience in languages used in E3SM (C++ and/or Fortran)
2+ years programming experience for data analysis and visualization of gridded data sets (e.g., Python/xarray, R, MATLAB, etc.)
1+ year experience with environmental or numerical tracers, such as stable isotope ratios or other geochemical tracers

Note to applicants: The application package consists of a CV and a cover letter. Your cover letter should explicitly address how you meet each of the minimum requirements and any of the desired qualifications, if applicable. In addition to applying online, applicants may email their CV and cover letter to Rich Fiorella (rfiorella at lanl.gov<mailto:rfiorella at lanl.gov>). No applicant is expected to have all of the desired qualifications. Anyone who meets the minimum requirements is encouraged to apply.

LANL postdoctoral researchers start with a minimum annual salary of $92,000. Candidates may be considered for a Director's Fellowship or Chick Keller Fellowship and outstanding candidates may be considered for the prestigious J. Robert Oppenheimer, Darleane Christian Hoffman, Richard P. Feynman, or Frederick Reines Distinguished Fellowships. For general information about the application processes and LANL fellowships refer to the LANL Postdoctoral Program<http://www.lanl.gov/careers/career-options/postdoctoral-research/index.php> page.
