Postdoctoral fellow for PROCEED (Perturbed Physics Ensemble Regression Optimization Center for ESM Evaluation and Development) – University of Wyoming

The University of Wyoming (UW) invites applications for a postdoctoral fellowship focused on developing the next generation of the Department of Energy (DOE) Energy Exascale Earth System Model (E3SM) and new techniques to confront models with observations with a focus on observations provided by DOE Atmospheric Radiation Measurement (ARM). This fellowship is funded through a UW-led collaboration with University of Hawaiʻi at Mānoa (UHM), Pacific Northwest National Lab (PNNL), and Lawrence Livermore National Lab (LLNL) as part of PROCEED (Perturbed Physics Ensemble Regression Optimization Center for ESM Evaluation and Development).
The successful candidate may begin as soon as the Fall of 2023. Later start dates are also possible. They will work with other postdoctoral scholars; UW and UHM faculty; and National Lab collaborators to develop a perturbed parameter ensemble (PPE) in E3SM. The core scientific questions to be examined with the E3SM PPE are to better understand aerosol-cloud-precipitation interactions (ACPIs) in warm, liquid clouds. DOE ARM observations will be used to constrain ACPIs and by extension provide constraints on historical aerosol cooling and future temperature change. Within UW, PROCEED hosts faculty from the department of Atmospheric Science (ATSC) and the School of Computing (SoC) and will work to develop machine learning emulators to allow robust process understanding and constraint.
The qualified applicant should have experience working with Earth System Models (ESMs) and observations and a background in atmospheric science. They should have a strong foundation in programming. Applicants should either have experience in using machine learning to develop surrogate models, or an interest in learning how to develop surrogate models. The postdoctoral scholar will be expected to participate in regular meetings with the PROCEED team as well as regular visits to National Labs.
The position is a 1 year appointment with renewal up to 2 years. PROCEED places a premium on advancing your career through conference travel and collaborating closely with our colleagues at National Labs, which is a key element of the proposal, including secondments to National Labs. Position is salaried at $60,000.00 annually plus benefits.
ESSENTIAL DUTIES AND RESPONSIBILITIES:
* Participate in regular meetings and collaborate with other scientists working on PROCEED at UW, UHM, and National Labs.
* Visit National Labs and collaborate with scientists at National Labs.
* Create a perturbed parameter ensemble (PPE) in E3SM and publish papers in the peer-reviewed literature describing the PPE.
* Use the E3SM PPE to answer questions about aerosol cooling and publish the results in the peer-reviewed literature.
* Present results related to PROCEED at nationally- and internationally-recognized conferences.
* Create, share, and archive reproducible and robust code.
REMOTE WORK ELIGIBILITY:
The successful candidate will be on-campus
MINIMUM QUALIFICATIONS:
* A PhD in Atmospheric Science or closely related field is required.
DESIRED QUALIFICATIONS:
* Experience using Earth System Models
* Experience using Python for data analysis
* Previous research on aspects of aerosol, cloud, and/or precipitation processes
* Familiarity with observations of aerosol, cloud, and precipitation
* Familiarity with building emulators/surrogate models
REQUIRED MATERIALS:
Applicants should complete the online application and submit a CV, a one page statement of research interests, and the contact information of 4 references. For further information, please contact Dr. McCoy (daniel.mccoy at uwyo.edu<mailto:daniel.mccoy at uwyo.edu>).

ABOUT LARAMIE:
The University of Wyoming is a land-grant university located in Laramie, a town of 30,000 in the heart of the Rocky Mountain West. The location is both scenic and accessible: Denver International Airport is a short flight from the Laramie regional airport or a 2.5 hour drive. Laramie hosts a laid-back, outdoorsy lifestyle with a low cost of living (for example, the cost of living is 66% lower than Seattle- see https://www.nerdwallet.com/cost-of-living-calculator/compare/laramie-wy-vs-seattle-wa). UW Atmospheric Science is a vibrant department boasting unrivaled supercomputer facilities and a research aircraft. UW is reserved 13% of total core-hours at the NCAR-Wyoming Supercomputing Center (NWSC). ATSC hosts the UW King Air, which flies as part of the NSF Lower Atmosphere Observing Facility (LAOF). ATSC is a graduate-only, research-focused department with a group composition of 7 faculty and 5 research scientists by fall 2023. UW and ATSC encourage candidates who will support and advance our mission of enhancing diversity to apply.
