[ES_JOBS_NET] Postdoc: Improved understanding of carbon and water cycling in semiarid regions

John Knowles jfknowles at csuchico.edu
Thu Dec 2 12:58:37 MST 2021

Scientists at the USDA-ARS Southwest Watershed Research Center are seeking a Postdoctoral Research Associate to improve understanding of carbon and water cycle linkages primarily in semiarid terrestrial ecosystems. We are entertaining research questions that can be addressed using eddy covariance observations of land-atmosphere water and carbon exchanges. Accordingly, we encourage applications from candidates that have interest and skills to address one or more of three focus areas/questions:

  1. (Flux data focus) What can long-term, multiyear eddy covariance observations tell us about semiarid ecosystem response to hydroclimate variability?
  2. (Big Data focus) How can regional-to-global eddy covariance observations be combined with novel remote sensing metrics and/or land surface models to improve understanding of dryland carbon fluxes response to climate variability?
  3. (Instrumentation) How can flux tower observations of carbon and water fluxes be improved by additional sensors, and how can comparisons of open and closed path infrared gas analyzers identify and correct biases in eddy fluxes?
The GS-11 position is based at the Southwest Watershed Research Center in Tucson, Arizona for a 2-year term, with a possibility of extending to 3 years with successful performance. The researchers will work with Dr. Russell Scott and other scientists at ARS as well as with university collaborators (at the Univ. of Arizona as well as elsewhere). This position requires US citizenship and a Ph.D. in geography, ecology, hydrology or a related field. It also requires knowledge of ecosystem carbon and water cycling and a familiarity with collecting and working with a variety of field data, principally including eddy covariance data. The ability to write and troubleshoot processing code written in MATLAB or a closely related language like Python or R is a must. The successful candidate will demonstrate good writing and presentation skills with a strong commitment to publishing.
Tucson is a unique, diverse and fun-filled university town. This mid-sized city strikes an excellent balance between outdoor and urban opportunities. Tucson is surrounded by forested sky island mountains and many unique desert ecosystems that make it an outdoor enthusiast’s dream (cycling, hiking, running, climbing, etc.). At the same time, city enthusiasts will find ample choices for multi-cultural foods, public events, live music and entertainment.
To apply, please contact Russell Scott (russ.scott at usda.gov<mailto:russ.scott at usda.gov>). With your correspondence, please include a full CV, a 1-page cover letter outlining your research interests related to one or more of the three focus areas above and your suitability for the job (including both prior experience and future research interest), a pdf-file of one publication, and the contact information for three references. Minorities, women, veterans, and individuals with disabilities are especially encouraged to apply.

*Postdoctoral Scholar - Watershed Simulations for Climate Resilience*

in the Department of Land, Air and Water Resources, University of
California, Davis

We are inviting applications for a postdoctoral scholar with expertise in
watershed modeling and the use of SWAT (Soil Water Assessment Tool) and/or
CalSim3 to simulate river basins in the Sierra Nevada mountain range using
state of the art climate products. The position is funded by a new research
effort at Lawrence Livermore National Laboratory focused on Climate
Resilience for National Security. The goal of the LLNL project is to
develop a framework that translates climate model information into
infrastructure-relevant risks. The postdoc will be responsible for:

(1) Recalibrate operational SWAT models for two major river basins
(Feather, Yuba) to predict daily unmanaged river flow using new remotely
sensed and ground-based snowpack products (ParBal, ASO, ARSO) and
state-of-the-art evapotranspiration products (California ETa) in a
multi-objective calibration;

(2) Refine spatial and temporal resolution of models to better predict
climate extremes (droughts, floods) by incorporating dynamic and adaptive
vegetation modeling capabilities; and

(3) Produce managed flow predictions for future climate scenarios using the
CalSim 3 water resources planning model and unmanaged flows predicted with
SWAT.

The successful candidate will work with an interdisciplinary team of
researchers led by Dr. Helen Dahlke at the University of California, Davis

The land that North Carolina State University sits on is land that was originally stewarded by two Indigenous tribes: the Tuscarora and the Catawba tribes. We honor these tribes today by recognizing that this institution of higher education is built on land stolen from those who were here before the colonizers arrived. Additionally this land has borne witness to over 400 years of the enslavement, torture, and systematic mistreatment of African people and their descendants. We honor these people today by recognizing them as a first step in breaking the cycle of colonization and the continued erasure of Indigenous and Black peoples. The essence of the position is the discovery and sharing of knowledge concerning how people of different backgrounds and lifeways learn about environmental systems, natural and/or cultural resources, and/or the practice of learning in informal education settings (e.g., nature centers, zoos, parks, reserves, greenways). This position will be a 60% Teaching / 40% Research, full-time, tenure-track, 9-month appointment.

rioritized by BIPOC, APIDA, LGBTQIA+, differently-abled, and/or underrepresented or underresourced minoritized groups. Examples of areas of interest could include but are not limited to research on indigenous knowledge and lifeways; natural and/or cultural resources of importance to different groups of people; use of assistive technologies to enhance outdoor and/or nature-based learning; enhancing the economic and social well-being of under-privileged or minoritized communities through environmental, outdoor, and/or nature-based education; etc.
