*Postdoctoral Scholar - Watershed Simulations for Climate Resilience*

in the Department of Land, Air and Water Resources, University of
California, Davis

We are inviting applications for a postdoctoral scholar with expertise in
watershed modeling and the use of SWAT (Soil Water Assessment Tool) and/or
CalSim3 to simulate river basins in the Sierra Nevada mountain range using
state of the art climate products. The position is funded by a new research
effort at Lawrence Livermore National Laboratory focused on Climate
Resilience for National Security. The goal of the LLNL project is to
develop a framework that translates climate model information into
infrastructure-relevant risks. The postdoc will be responsible for:

(1) Recalibrate operational SWAT models for two major river basins
(Feather, Yuba) to predict daily unmanaged river flow using new remotely
sensed and ground-based snowpack products (ParBal, ASO, ARSO) and
state-of-the-art evapotranspiration products (California ETa) in a
multi-objective calibration;

(2) Refine spatial and temporal resolution of models to better predict
climate extremes (droughts, floods) by incorporating dynamic and adaptive
vegetation modeling capabilities; and

(3) Produce managed flow predictions for future climate scenarios using the
CalSim 3 water resources planning model and unmanaged flows predicted with
SWAT.

The successful candidate will work with an interdisciplinary team of
researchers led by Dr. Helen Dahlke at the University of California, Davis
and Dr. Ate Visser at Lawrence Livermore National Lab, and partners at
California Department of Water Resources (Dr. Tariq Kadir) and climate and
infrastructure researchers at LLNL. There will be opportunities to pursue
independent lines of inquiry related to watershed responses to climate
variability,
and to co-author publications led by other team members. There will also be
opportunities to interact with other UC Davis hydrology and climate science
partners.

The land that North Carolina State University sits on is land that was originally stewarded by two Indigenous tribes: the Tuscarora and the Catawba tribes. We honor these tribes today by recognizing that this institution of higher education is built on land
stolen from those who were here before the colonizers arrived. Additionally this land has borne witness to over 400 years of the enslavement, torture, and systematic mistreatment of African people and their descendants. We honor these people today by recognizing
them as a first step in breaking the cycle of colonization and the continued erasure of Indigenous and Black peoples. the broader community. Our aim is to recruit, support, and retain a scholar that will broaden the scope of environmental and natural resource education research within our School and University. To that end, we encourage applications from scholars whose research
presents new perspectives on current priorities in the School, including understanding the inter-relationships between informal settings and learning across populations, different ontological perspectives, etc. We are particularly interested in applications
from individuals with diverse life experiences and whose research demonstrates evidence of engaged outdoor or field-based scholarship with diverse communities, including research that addresses issues affecting and/or p
rioritized by BIPOC, APIDA, LGBTQIA+, differently-abled, and/or underrepresented or underresourced minoritized groups. Examples of areas of interest could include but are not limited to research on indigenous knowledge and lifeways; natural and/or cultural
resources of importance to different groups of people; use of assistive technologies to enhance outdoor and/or nature-based learning; enhancing the economic and social well-being of under-privileged or minoritized communities through environmental, outdoor,
and/or nature-based education; etc.
