Postdoctoral Researcher Positions in Boundary-Layer and Mesoscale
Meteorology
The research group of Prof. Jianping Guo at the Specialized Meteorological
Support Technology Research Center, Chinese Academy of Meteorological
Sciences (CAMS) invites applications for 2–3 postdoctoral researchers in
boundary-layer meteorology, mesoscale meteorology, turbulence–convection
interactions, data assimilation, and related areas.
The group conducts research on atmospheric boundary-layer processes,
mesoscale weather systems, turbulence–convection interactions, and
convective initiation, with particular emphasis on improving the monitoring
and prediction of high-impact weather.
Current research includes the retrieval of key thermodynamic and dynamical
parameters from multi-source observations, investigation of cloud-topped
boundary layers and convective initiation, development of boundary-layer
and convection parameterizations, and the application of artificial
intelligence and big-data methods to severe-weather monitoring and early
warning.
Research Focus
Postdoctoral researchers may work in one or more of the following areas:
• Boundary-layer thermodynamic and dynamic parameter retrieval
Development and validation of retrieval algorithms for temperature,
humidity, wind, turbulence dissipation rate, vorticity, divergence,
vertical velocity, and related variables using vertically resolved
atmospheric observations.
• Multi-source data assimilation
Development and optimization of data-assimilation methods for
boundary-layer and convective processes, including observation operators
and AI-enhanced data-assimilation approaches.
• Boundary-layer and convection parameterization
Development, improvement, and validation of parameterization schemes for
turbulence, boundary-layer processes, and turbulence–convection
interactions using high-resolution observations and numerical simulations.
• Mesoscale meteorology
Observational and modeling studies of mesoscale weather systems, including
heavy precipitation, severe convection, damaging winds, and the physical
mechanisms governing their development and evolution.
Qualifications
Applicants should:
• Hold, or expect to obtain before appointment, a Ph.D. in atmospheric
science or a closely related field from a recognized university or research
institution. The Ph.D. should normally have been awarded within the past
three years.
• Generally be no older than 35 years of age, be in good health, and not be
applying for a second or subsequent postdoctoral appointment.
• Have a solid theoretical background in boundary-layer meteorology,
mesoscale meteorology, atmospheric dynamics, or related areas. Candidates
with experience in artificial intelligence are particularly encouraged to
apply.
• Have demonstrated research ability, including at least one SCI-indexed
publication in a relevant research field. Applicants who have published
first-author papers in high-quality journals in the field within the past
five years will be given preference.
• Have strong programming skills, familiarity with high-performance
computing environments, and proficiency in at least one scientific
computing, statistical analysis, or visualization tool such as Python,
MATLAB, or NCL.
• Have good English listening, speaking, reading, and writing skills,
strong practical research abilities, an innovative scientific mindset, and
the ability to conduct research independently.
• Demonstrate strong professional ethics and integrity, comply with
applicable laws and regulations, and have no adverse professional record.
• Demonstrate strong teamwork, professionalism, and commitment to
scientific research, and be able to work full-time on postdoctoral research
throughout the appointment.
Experience with machine learning, numerical weather prediction, data
assimilation, high-resolution modeling, multi-source atmospheric
observations, or UAV-based meteorological measurements and observations is
particularly welcome. Applicants with hands-on experience in UAV-based
meteorological measurements will be given preference.
Appointment and Benefits
The standard postdoctoral appointment is two years. Where required by the
research program, the appointment may be extended for up to one additional
year, subject to approval and a supplementary agreement.
Postdoctoral researchers receive salary and benefits in accordance with
CAMS regulations and individual research performance.
Additional benefits include:
• Position- and performance-based compensation in accordance with CAMS
regulations;
• Recognition at the intermediate professional-title level for eligible
postdoctoral researchers who have not previously undergone
professional-title evaluation;
• Postdoctoral apartments provided by the China Meteorological
Administration (CMA), or a housing allowance for eligible researchers who
do not use designated postdoctoral housing;
• Household-registration relocation support for eligible researchers in
accordance with relevant policies;
• A one-time pre-tax award of RMB 200,000 for postdoctoral researchers who
complete their appointment on schedule and receive an Excellent rating in
their final assessment, subject to institutional review and approval.
Application
Applicants should submit a CV together with the following supporting
materials:
1. Copies of the doctoral graduation certificate and Ph.D. degree
certificate, or official documentation confirming expected completion of
the doctoral degree;
2. The applicant’s doctoral dissertation;
3. Two published papers that best demonstrate the applicant’s research
ability and academic level, or one independently authored academic
monograph;
4. A brief postdoctoral research proposal;
5. A copy of a valid identification document or passport;
6. Two signed recommendation letters from doctoral supervisors or senior
experts in a relevant discipline, including one from the applicant’s own
Ph.D. supervisor. Recommendation letters should include the referee’s
handwritten signature.
Application materials should be combined into a single compressed file
named:
Postdoctoral Application – Name – Research Area
The email subject line should be:
Postdoctoral Application – Name
Shortlisted applicants will proceed to the formal CAMS postdoctoral-entry
review and oral defense.
The oral defense includes a 30-minute presentation:
• First 15 minutes: academic background, education and professional
experience, research achievements, doctoral and previous research work, and
publications;
• Second 15 minutes: proposed postdoctoral research, including the current
state of the field, scientific questions, preliminary research ideas,
methodology, and planned research activities.
Following successful completion of the institutional review and approval
