Postdoctoral Associate - Earth and Atmospheric Sciences

*The College of Agriculture and Life Sciences (CALS) is a pioneer of
purpose-driven science and Cornell University’s second largest college. We
work across disciplines to tackle the challenges of our time through
world-renowned research, education, and outreach. The questions we probe
and the answers we seek focus on three overlapping concerns: We believe
that achieving next-generation scientific breakthroughs requires an
understanding of the world’s complex, interlocking systems. We believe that
access to nutritious food and a healthy environment is a fundamental human
right. We believe that ensuring a prosperous global future depends on the
ability to support local people and communities everywhere. By working in
and across multiple scientific areas, CALS can address challenges and
opportunities of the greatest relevance, here in New York, across the
nation, and around the world.*

*The Department of Earth and Atmospheric Sciences at Cornell University
seeks a postdoctoral associate to develop innovative approaches to
hurricane risk assessment through a new industry-academic partnership. This
is a two- or three- year position supported by direct industry partnership
and Atkinson Center funding and renewed annually upon satisfaction of
progress and availability of funds.*

We seek a candidate with strong capabilities in hurricane modeling and risk
assessment, and demonstrated experience in one or several of the following
areas:

   - Tropical cyclone dynamics and thermodynamics
   - Statistical and/or machine learning approaches to weather prediction
   - Risk assessment and catastrophe modeling
   - High-performance computing and large dataset manipulation

The position involves close collaboration with industry partners in climate
risk assessment, focusing on:

   - Development of novel approaches to synthetic storm generation
   - Implementation of counterfactual analysis for historical storms
   - Integration of climate pattern effects (e.g., ENSO) into risk models
   - Regular engagement with industry partners through direct consultation

*Anticipated Division of Time*

 Position Responsibilities:

   - Development of Novel Approaches to Synthetic Storm Generation – 40%
   - Implementation of Counterfactual Analysis for Historical Storms – 25%
