University of Delaware
Department of Geography and Spatial Sciences
The Department of Geography and Spatial Sciences (GSS) in the College of
Earth, Ocean, and Environment of the University of Delaware seeks a
tenure-track Assistant Professor in Urban Climate Science to support our
graduate program in Climatology and our undergraduate program in
Meteorology and Climate Science as well as our Graduate Certificate in GIS
and Data Analytics. We seek exceptional individuals eager to work in an
interdisciplinary research environment who wish to become leaders in their
fields while engaging in high-quality teaching and mentoring of a diverse
student body. Applicants are expected to show significant potential to
develop a nationally and internationally recognized funded research
program. The successful candidate will have a strong background in modeling
urban climates with preference for scholars who have complementarities with
existing faculty strengths, land surface-atmosphere interactions, urban
heat island dynamics and data analytics using a range of geospatial and
observational technologies in cities.
The ability to harness large data sets with machine learning and/or use of
Artificial Intelligence (AI) methodologies in the investigation of urban
climates would be particularly welcome. The successful candidate will
contribute to undergraduate and graduate teaching within our
Meteorology/Climate Science programs, especially courses such as urban
meteorology and climatology, boundary-layer meteorology, land-surface
interactions, and synoptic-dynamic meteorology.
GSS offers six undergraduate majors (Meteorology and Climate Science,
Environmental Science, Environmental Studies, Geography, Geography
Education, and GIScience and Environmental Data Analytics), four graduate
degree programs (Climatology PhD; Geography MA, MS, and PhD), along with
several undergraduate minors and graduate certificates. GSS is home to a
vibrant student population of 300 undergraduate and 30 graduate students.
This position would also have opportunities for linkages with the Data
Science Institute on campus and the development of a new Urban Geospatial
Analytics Lab.
