These are (up to) three-year positions for junior scholars doing interdisciplinary work that intersects with computation. These are positions for independent thinkers—much like "society of fellows" positions at various schools—and are great for complex systems-related recent PhDs.
Candidates need to find mentors in at least two different departments at Dartmouth interested in their work. Fellows have access to resources for travel and research and even the possibility of hosting small meetings. Fellows teach one course in each year of their residency. These can be courses of their own design, although sometimes NFs teach existing courses too.
