Climate and Large-Scale Dynamics/Physical and Dynamic Meteorology Program Director

The Division of Atmospheric and Geospace Sciences (AGS) at the National Science Foundation (NSF) seeks a rotator candidate for a joint position of Program Director (PD) for the Climate and Large-Scale Dynamics<https://new.nsf.gov/funding/opportunities/climate-large-scale-dynamics-cld> (CLD) and Physical and Dynamic Meteorology<https://new.nsf.gov/funding/opportunities/physical-dynamic-meteorology-pdm> (PDM) programs. The responsibilities of the NSF PD include long-range planning and budget development for the program, the administration of the merit review process and proposal recommendations, the preparation of press releases, feature articles and material describing advances in the research supported, and coordination and partnership with other programs in NSF, other Federal agencies and organizations. Specifically for this position, we seek to identify a candidate with expertise in climate and/or weather modeling, who could also provide support in the oversight of NCAR's modeling activities.

Please refer to the Dear Colleague Letter<https://new.nsf.gov/careers/openings/geo/ags/ags-2022-85586> that serves as an announcement of opportunity to become a PD through the Intergovernmental Personnel Act (IPA). IPA rotators come to NSF on temporary (1-4 year) assignments and serve in a full-time program management role alongside NSF permanent staff. The advantage to NSF of the rotator arrangement is that it brings in new ideas and viewpoints from the scientific community, and the advantage to the rotator and home institution is that the rotator gains increased visibility and a full appreciation of the scientific landscape across the US. Rotators are also allowed Independent Research/Development (IRD) plans that provide time to maintain involvement with professional research and mentoring. IPAs remain employees of their home institution and NSF provides an award to the institution to cover the cost of the individual.

The candidate would ideally start as soon as possible. Official application materials should be submitted per the instructions in the Dear Colleague Letter (https://new.nsf.gov/careers/openings/geo/ags/ags-2022-85586). Questions about the position can be directed to Dr. Yu Gu, acting Section Head of the Atmosphere Section (ygu at nsf.gov<mailto:ygu at nsf.gov>). Review of applications will begin September 1, 2023 and continue until the position is filled. NSF is an equal opportunity employer.
