assignments and serve in a full-time program management role alongside NSF permanent staff. The advantage to NSF of the rotator arrangement is that it brings in new ideas and viewpoints from the scientific community, and the advantage to the rotator and home
institution is that the rotator gains increased visibility and a full appreciation of the scientific landscape across the US. Rotators are also allowed Independent Research/Development (IRD) plans that provide time to maintain involvement with professional
research and mentoring. IPAs remain employees of their home institution and NSF provides an award to the institution to cover the cost of the individual.
