Description

The Department of Earth and Planetary Sciences and at the University of Tennessee, Knoxville invites applications to fill the position of Lecturer, beginning August 1, 2023.

We seek a creative and inspiring educator to join our teaching faculty.  The successful applicant will be expected to teach courses in environmental studies and geology and, ideally, to serve as the department’s Geochemistry Teaching Laboratory supervisor/coordinator. Course assignments may include Earth’s Environments (GEOL 103) and other environmental courses, depending on the needs of the department and the qualifications of the successful applicant. The Geochemistry Teaching Laboratory is a shared-use facility with a broad suite of instrumentation (https://eps.utk.edu/research/facilities_geochemistry.php). The successful applicant will be expected to supervise safe laboratory use, including its chemical hygiene plans, safety and training documentation, and waste management, as well as maintain equipment, provide familiarization training to new users, including students and faculty advisors, and coordinate equipment use for department members engaging in teaching courses and research activities.

The salary for this position is commensurate with experience and other qualifications. This is a full-time, 9-month non-tenure track appointment with the salary being paid over twelve months, plus benefits. A supplement for lab coordination during summer is available, and summer term teaching may be an option for additional pay. The initial appointment will be made for a one-year term with potential for annual renewal pending department funding and needs. Promotion for teaching faculty is possible through a career ladder that provides for multi-year contracts following promotion.

Qualifications

Required Qualifications:

1) a M.S. or Ph.D. in the geosciences, geochemistry, environmental science, or related discipline; 2) college-level teaching experience and demonstrated interested in teaching using best practices for student success; 3) two years of experience performing geochemical laboratory analyses and testing.

Preferred Qualifications:

Preference will be given to candidates with at least one of the following additional qualifications: 1) experience with ICP-OES, HPIC, and GC methods, and experience with basic wet-lab procedures; 2) experience teaching in large introductory lecture in-person courses; 3) experience in designing and implementing instructional material that reflect a student-centered learning approach; and 4) experience supervising and mentoring graduate teaching assistants.
