CarbonPlan has a new FT remote job opening for a *Carbon Dioxide Removal
Research Scientist*!
Description

A core part of our mission is to create public resources on climate
solutions based on the best available science and data. As developments in
carbon dioxide removal (CDR) accelerate, we want to grow our capacity to
share relevant research, tools, and insights around emerging CDR
approaches. We’re particularly interested in “open system” approaches like
ocean alkalinity enhancement and enhanced weathering that require expertise
in geochemistry to understand and model. As a CDR Research Scientist, you
will be responsible for designing and implementing research projects that
inform deployment and decision-making around CDR technologies, with a focus
on “open system” approaches. Your work will support several CDR
initiatives, both within our team and with external collaborators. You will
report to the CDR Program Manager, and participate in a collaborative
working culture in which you will contribute to setting strategy and
priorities.

*You will:*

   - Perform research projects on specific CDR approaches in support of our
broader CDR program with a focus on “open system” approaches like ocean
alkalinity enhancement and enhanced weathering (see e.g., our research
   projects on forest carbon overcrediting
   <https://carbonplan.org/research/forest-offsets-explainer> and macroalgae
   potential <https://carbonplan.org/research/seaweed-farming-explainer>)
   - Help synthesize and communicate the best available CDR science (see
e.g., our research projects on soil carbon accounting
   <https://carbonplan.org/research/soil-depth-sampling>and CDR verification
   <https://carbonplan.org/research/cdr-verification>)
   - Publish CarbonPlan research articles, tools, blogs, and scientific
   journal articles
   - Work collaboratively with other team members at CarbonPlan and with
   external partners
   - Coordinate to engage media, research, and decision-making communities
in the public and private sectors

Requirements

*You should have:*

   - Passion for our mission
   - An advanced degree or training in chemistry, geochemistry, geology,
oceanography, carbon cycle science, or another field directly relevant to
   science of “open-system” carbon removal
   - A track record of participating in interdisciplinary and/or
   policy-relevant research
   - Experience leading research projects
   - Some familiarity with scientific programming (e.g., Python)
   - Excellent non-academic written and verbal communication skills
   - Experience working in highly collaborative and cross-functional
   environments
   - A portfolio of relevant research contributions, including at least one
sample of your own writing (e.g., articles, presentations, etc.)

*You’ll be an especially good fit if you have:*

   - Desire to use your expertise as a foundation for learning new things
   - Experience working directly on carbon removal or climate science
   - Experience thinking about the political economy and market mechanics
   of climate solutions
   - Experience at the boundary of science and decision-making processes
   (public or private)
   - Experience with academic research and publication processes
   - Experience with scientific Python, Jupyter notebooks, and related tools
   - Experience with open source software development and GitHub
