M.S. Assistantship: River Plumes as Pathways
Application deadline: Open until filled, preferred submission on or before 3/15/2022
Opportunity description: Seeking 1 M.S. student to evaluate the potential for increased offshore transport of nutrients between the Winyah Bay estuary plume and coastal shelf surface waters under light upwelling-favorable wind forcing and strong river discharge conditions. The student will participate in two week-long cruises in April and May 2022 and 2023 and participate in related data analyses and reporting in peer-reviewed formats. The funded research assistantship includes in-state tuition rate and wages at the current University assistantship rate ($19,100/12 months).
Qualifications: B.S. in marine science, mathematics, physics, engineering, computer science, or related field. Preferred: Working knowledge of MATLAB or similar software, experience in and comfort with working on small vessels in estuarine and coastal waters, familiarity with lab and field calibration, maintenance, and use of electronic sampling probes, high motivation to learn practical estuarine and coastal ocean applied physics techniques, and strong writing, quantitative and communication skills.
