Job Description and Duties
We seek a motivated and creative professional senior scientist to join our diverse research program in the Estuarine Science and Synthesis Unit. The incumbent will be a technical expert in phytoplankton ecology for DWR and lead, facilitate, and participate in interagency forums and collaborative and regulatory teams on harmful algal blooms (HABs) in the San Francisco Estuary (Estuary). These efforts support the continued operation of the State Water Project and state and federal mandates. The purpose of HAB monitoring is to develop a baseline for the distribution, abundance, and toxicity of HABs in the open waters of the Estuary to better assess impacts of management actions.

The incumbent will collaborate closely with the State Water Board, the California CyanoHAB network, and other agency partners and these teams may result in the development and implementation of a HAB monitoring program. The incumbent will also lead applied scientific studies and utilize innovative technologies to increase understanding of phytoplankton ecology (especially cyanobacteria and cyanotoxins) and their contribution to food webs and trophic transfer in the Estuary. In this capacity, the incumbent will lead field and laboratory investigations; propose, develop, and conduct relevant scientific studies; analyze and synthesize ecological data from studies and long-term Interagency Ecological Program (IEP) monitoring datasets; prepare documentation for study permitting; communicate research findings by authoring technical reports and peer-reviewed articles in relevant journals and giving oral/poster presentations at pertinent scientific conferences; and work cooperatively with multiple state and federal agencies, universities and stakeholders. The incumbent will also mentor junior staff as appropriate within DWR and IEP.

Desirable Qualifications
In addition to evaluating each candidate's relative ability, as demonstrated by quality and breadth of experience, the following factors will provide the basis for competitively evaluating each candidate:

Technical experience in phytoplankton (or microbial ecology), food webs, biological community dynamics, genetics, water quality, and aquatic ecology. Expertise in advanced techniques for the analysis of phytoplankton communities (especially cyanobacteria and cyanotoxins) such as metagenomics, quantitative polymerase chain reaction (qPCR), enzyme-linked immunosorbent assays (ELISA), solid phase adsorption toxin tracking (SPATT) sampling, and the microscopic identification and enumeration of phytoplankton as well as applied statistics, mathematical modeling, and bioinformatics is desired. Experience with field sampling of phytoplankton, laboratory skills, scientific study design, and boat operation are beneficial. Strong organizational, project management, writing, and oral communication skills are essential. Must have a collaborative approach to science with an ability to work both independently and as part of a team.
