Introduction
UNIL is a leading international teaching and research institution, with over 5,000 employees and 17,000 students split between its Dorigny campus, CHUV and Epalinges. As an employer, UNIL encourages excellence, individual recognition and responsibility.
Presentation
The Institute of Earth Surface Dynamics (IDYST) of the Faculty of Geosciences and Environment of the University of Lausanne opens a position of Junior Lecturer (Postdoctoral Researcher) in Rhizosphere Biogeochemistry and Climate Change.
Job information
Expected start date in position : 01.09.2022 or upon mutual agreement.
Contract length : 2 years initially, renewable
Activity rate : 100%
Workplace : Lausanne-Mouline (Geopolis building)
Your responsibilities
The candidates will join a strong and growing Soil Biogeochemistry group studying the interactions of minerals, microbes, and organic matter in the face of climate change. The successful candidate will perform research on the dynamics of microbe-mineral-organic matter interactions in the rhizosphere, and their vulnerability to climatic drivers. Specifically, this project will address how plant and microbially mediated mineral transformations impact the fate of carbon and nitrogen. This work will include laboratory-, growth chamber- and field-based experiments. The candidate will employ cutting-edge chemical and biological analyses, including stable isotope tracers, spectro/microscopic techniques, metabolomics, and microsensors. The project involves close collaborations with a suite of international collaborators across Europe and the US. A maximum of 15% of the workload will consist of teaching support for Bachelor and Master-level courses in soil biogeochemistry.

Your qualifications
To expand our Soil Biogeochemistry group, we are looking for someone with the following background:

  * Successfull candidates will have an excellent PhD in biogeosciences, environmental sciences, plant and soil sciences, microbiology, or related field.
  * Excellent knowledge of biogeochemical processes within soils, particularly plant-microbe-mineral interactions, is a requirement.
  * Prior experience with experiments in plant and soil sciences, basic wet-chemical lab procedures and analyses, and data analysis is required.
  * Familiarity with isotopes, spectro/microscopic tools and metabolomics is an advantage.
  * Commitment to conducting research on soil biogeochemical processes regulating organic matter dynamics.
  * Excellent skills in written and oral English are required. Working knowledge of French is preferable but not necessary.
  * Well-honed interpersonal skills and an ability to work well in a multicultural team and department.

What the position offers you
As an employer, UNIL encourages excellence, individual recognition and responsibility. The Soil Biogeochemistry group within the Faculty of Geoscience and the Environment offers a vibrant work place in a multicultural, diverse and dynamic academic environment.
