The Lamont-Doherty Earth Observatory of Columbia University (LDEO)
located in Palisades, New York, invites applications for a Postdoctoral
Research Scientist interested in the use of physically-informed machine
learning to refine closures used in the calculation of atmospheric
radiation. The position is part of the recent National Science
Foundation Learning the Earth with Artificial intelligence and Physics
(LEAP) Science and Technology Center (STC), https://leap.columbia.edu/,
a large multi-institutional center effort meant to improve climate
projections using novel artificial intelligence for better climate
adaptation.

This project aims to revisit assumptions at the very core of
calculations of radiative transfer calculations. The two-stream
approximation used for computing the fate of sunlight, for example,
makes assumptions about the angular distribution of light in the sky and
how this co-varies with the light scattered from individual particles.
Assumptions made almost half a century ago remain in wide use and are
one cause of persistent radiation errors. This project will focus on
using machine learning to revisit and revise assumptions like these,
aspirationally using techniques such as equation discovery to ensure
interpretability and distill the results for wide-spread use. The
researcher is expected to present findings at national or international
scientific conferences and to prepare publications for submission to
scientific journals.

The postdoctoral research scientist will collaborate with a team of
scientists including Prof. Robert Pincus (Lamont-Doherty Earth
Observatory, Columbia University), Prof. Carl Vondrick (Computer
Science, Columbia University) and Prof. Laure Zanna (Courant Institute,
New York University). The Postdoctoral Research Scientist will join both
the vibrant research community at Lamont Doherty Earth Observatory and
LEAP’s burgeoning transdisciplinary team at the interface between
machine learning/data science and climate sciences, including research
scientists, faculty members, PhD students, undergraduate and
Bridge-to-PhD researchers.

_*Qualifications:*_
Candidates should have completed or be nearing completion of a Ph.D. in
in Atmospheric, Climate, or Earth System Science, Chemistry, Applied
Mathematics, Engineering, or related fields. Excellent communication
skills are important and experience with machine learning is an
advantage. One of the primary goals of LEAP is to increase the diversity
in geosciences and data science, to be on par with the US population by
the end of the Center lifetime. The Center will take proactive steps to
reach its diversity goal. We thus particularly welcome applicants from
underrepresented groups.

Appointment will be for 1 year with continuation pending progress and
funding.

The search will remain open for at least 30 days after the ad appears
and will continue until the position is filled.

Columbia University benefits are offered with this Officer of Research
appointment.
