Description
This position will provide molecular biology expertise to the Human Health and Performance Contract (HHPC) at NASA Johnson Space Center (JSC) in support of NASA human spaceflight programs. As a senior position, the molecular biologist will be responsible for working with the NASA Technical Monitor and Microbiology Laboratory to implement multiple NGS projects using various platforms. These duties will include implementing routine molecular biology techniques such as nucleic acid purification, PCR, NGS library preparation, and quantification. Additionally, the successful candidate will be expected to operate and maintain Illumina and Oxford Nanopore Technologies sequencing platforms. While many protocols are already in place, there will be opportunities to support the development of molecular assays for NASA analogs and spaceflight missions.
DUTIES AND RESPONSIBILITIES
* Perform DNA and RNA extractions from various sample types
* Perform PCRs and assess DNA and RNA quality (Agilent QC and Qubit QC)
* Perform library preparation for Illumina sequencing
* Perform library preparation for nanopore sequencing
* Perform sequencing runs on both Illumina and nanopore platforms
* Prepare new sequencing workflows as required by various projects
* Use and maintain a liquid handling system (epMotion) for Illumina sequencing preparation
* Support the development of molecular assays for NASA analogs and spaceflight
* Write technical reports and method/instrument SOPs
* Demonstrate the ability to resolve project hurdles by applying technical expertise in molecular biology
* Accountable for the accuracy, organization, and interpretation of data
* Conduct laboratory routine instrument maintenance, reagent testing, and consumable tracking to maintain production without interruption
* Deliver high-quality results through independent and collaborative efforts
Education/Experience
Required:
* A Ph.D. with 2 years of experience, an M.S. with 5 years of experience, or a B.S. with 10 years of experience in molecular biology, microbiology, biology, biochemistry, cell biology, or a related field
* Extensive demonstrated expertise with molecular biology techniques such as nucleic acid purification, PCR, NGS library preparation, and quantification
* Demonstrated expertise with Illumina sequencing, sample preparation through sequencing
* Experience troubleshooting Illumina sequencing runs
* Excellent communication and presentation skills
Desired:
* Background in Microbiology
* Experience with microbial metagenomic sequencing
* Experience with nanopore sequencing
* Experience with cell culture
* Experience with flow cytometry
* Experience using and maintaining a liquid handling device
* Ability to assist with NGS data analysis
* Experience performing qPCR assays
* Demonstrated ability to support the writing and publication of scientific manuscripts
