The Department of Geography at Villanova University has a fully funded opportunity for a graduate student to participate with an NSF-supported geoscience education project that seeks to broaden participation in the geosciences by racially minoritized high-school students. The graduate student will assist with two phases: (1) a Philadelphia public high school-based, inquiry-driven research experience over fall and spring semester which will involve co-mentoring by Villanova geoscience faculty, to investigate water, soil and air contamination within the high school students' local community, and (2) the Villanova Environmental Geochemistry Summer Institute, an immersive, on-campus, four-week long summer research experience where high school students collaborate with Villanova undergraduate geoscience majors on existing, local urban environmental geochemistry research projects with established community partners.
We seek a student who is excited to engage in a novel collaborative, interdisciplinary project with extensive peer mentoring which will culminate in a M.S. degree in Environmental Science. In particular, the student will assist in the preparation, implementation and assessment of active-learning modules and will also coordinate the one-month summer research institute where students participate in an ongoing faculty research. Student background may include degrees from relevant backgrounds, including but not limited to chemistry, environmental science, and earth sciences. We welcome and encourage applicants from groups historically underrepresented in STEM and Earth Sciences. We also encourage applications from those with prior academic and/or work experiences related to urban environmental contamination, environmental justice and/or those with secondary-level teaching experience. The fully-funded student position (stipend + tuition waiver) is available starting August 2022. More information regarding the M.S. Program in Environmental Science, including the application process, can be found here<https://www1.villanova.edu/university/liberal-arts-sciences/programs/geography-environment/graduate-programs.html>. Please contact Dr. Steven Goldsmith (steven.goldsmith at villanova.edu<mailto:steven.goldsmith at villanova.edu>) for more information about the available position and/or to set-up an informal remote interview. Additional information about the NSF funded project can be found here<https://www.nsf.gov/awardsearch/showAward?AWD_ID=2118813&HistoricalAwards=false>.
