Assistant Research Professor

*         JOB DESCRIPTION AND POSITION REQUIREMENTS:

The Department of Geosciences invites applications from qualified candidates to engage in research activities related to chemical records of high-temperature geologic processes. Research related tasks associated with this position include working with and collection of geologic samples, advanced sample preparation for isotopic and elemental analysis, and building long-lasting scientific collaborations across the Department of Geosciences and the University Park campus. Candidates will have a minimum of 5 years of experience in the development of laser ablation inductively coupled plasma mass spectrometry analysis techniques, including: quadrupole mass spectrometer analysis, U-Pb analysis of trace mineral phases, laser ablation sampling methods, and laser ablation split stream isotopic and chemical analysis (LASS). The successful candidate will also be an expert in the fields of igneous and metamorphic petrology and will be able to communicate scientific results with collaborators and students.

The responsibilities include interpretation and careful assessment of geochemical and isotopic data, writing peer reviewed publications, presenting talks at professional meetings, and working collaboratively and effectively in a diverse team environment. Ability to lead and assist in writing grant proposals, with the potential to grow into an independent researcher is highly desired. A Ph.D. in Geosciences and at least 5 years of subsequent research experience are required for the position.
