 Position Summary

The Department of Plant, Soil, and Microbial Sciences (PSM,
www.canr.msu.edu/psm/) in the College of Agriculture and Natural
Resources (CANR, www.canr.msu.edu) at Michigan State University invites
applications for a 9-month Academic Year, tenure-track Assistant Professor,
in Soil Science with experience and special emphasis in soil genesis and
classification. The successful candidate will develop an active teaching
(70%) and research (30%) program that employs innovative, evidence-based
teaching practices to engage undergraduate and graduate students and help
facilitate student learning and understanding. Research interests may
include discipline-based education research that combines knowledge of
teaching and learning with soil science, with interest in a research topic
such as geomorphology and soil genesis, soil pedometrics, climate change
and soil resources, soil health, or anthropogenic soils.

The successful applicant will join a diverse group of over 75 faculty
involved in teaching, research, extension, and public service who support
an enthusiastic and dynamic population of over 80+ undergraduate and 100+
graduate students engaged in a wide range of activities. Teaching
responsibilities will include leading the introductory Fundamentals of Soil
Science course (CSS 210, every semester) available for majors and/or
non-majors and an upper-level Soil Resources course (CSS
470, Fall semesters) focused on soil genesis and
classification available to both undergraduate and graduate students. The
successful candidate will (1) conduct and publish discipline based
educational research in the soil sciences including understanding and
improving student learning, and (2) develop a competitively funded research
program relevant to the position responsibilities. University resources to
support scholarly teaching, engagement, and application of science teaching
practices within the Scholarship of Teaching and Learning are available
including: STEM teaching essentials workshops, Lilly Teaching Fellows
Program, and the Academic Advancement Network. Preferred candidates will be
expected to demonstrate a commitment to excellent teaching and mentoring of
both graduate students and undergraduates. Individuals who share a

ecosystem research. PSM is a multi-disciplinary department with faculty
appointed in the College of Agriculture and Natural Resources. Michigan is
an agriculturally and ecologically diverse state subject to unique soil
formation processes containing a mixture of six soil orders and unique

Required Degree

Doctorate -Soil Science
Minimum Requirements

A PhD in soil science or related discipline with expertise in soil genesis
and classification preferred along with postdoctoral experience.
Demonstrated experience with pedagogy for diverse learners also preferred.
Candidates should have excellent written and interpersonal skills and be
able to interact within multi-disciplinary teams to address teaching and
research topics relevant to the position responsibilities.
