About the Job

The Department of Earth and Environmental Sciences is seeking a part-time
(20 hours per week), continuing Civil Service Research Professional 2 (job
code 8352P2).

This position will be responsible for the maintenance, upkeep, and safe use
of field and laboratory equipment and facilities in the Department of Earth
and Environmental Sciences. The individual in this position will assist
faculty with laboratory course needs to provide a robust academic
experience for students by ensuring that all equipment is serviced and
functional, all teaching assistants receive proper training, and all
samples are curated and accessible. The individual in this position will
take the lead on departmental field and laboratory safety needs,
establishing safety protocols, leading training of all users on
departmental equipment, and ensuring the field and laboratory safety
protocols are followed. This position is responsible for arranging for
maintenance and upkeep of departmental vans and training for van drivers,
coordinating with ITSS to maintain the departmental computer lab, and
assisting with upkeep of departmental museum collections and teaching
collections.
Qualifications

Required Qualifications:
A bachelor’s degree in Geology or Environmental Science or a related field
is required and two years of experience or a combination of related
education and work experience to equal six years.

Preferred Qualifications:
Experience maintaining scientific laboratory and/or field equipment.
Demonstrated record of safety training and experience leading training
sessions.
Experience organizing, inventorying, and archiving of physical sample
collections.
Must be able to lift and move samples and equipment.
Must be able to work with chemical storage, including radioactive materials.

*Major Job Duties:*

Maintain and oversee departmental laboratories, including lab and field
equipment (50%):

• Maintain and oversee departmental field supplies (e.g., canoe and its
equipment, Brunton compasses, surveying equipment, soil sampling equipment,
water quality probes, geophysical equipment, GPS units, etc.)
• Maintain and oversee department laboratory equipment (e.g., rock saws and
polishers, drying ovens, sediment processing equipment, shatter box, etc.)
• Monitor implementation, management, and coordination of activities in
shared laboratory facilities.
• Develop guidelines and protocols for shared facility usage.
• Prioritize and plan laboratory and field equipment upgrades.
• Coordinate budget planning related to departmental facilities and
equipment with department administrator and department head.
• Solve technical problems with minimal guidance.
• Train and oversee users of departmental shared equipment and facilities.
• Ensure all lab personnel are compliant with safety regulations and lab
specific protocols are established and followed.
• Run field and laboratory safety trainings.
• Maintain training records and chemical audit binders.
• Purchase laboratory and field equipment and supplies as needed.
• Maintain departmental capital equipment inventory.

Assist faculty with technical help for classes and research labs (25%):

• Perform lab set up and tear down for laboratory courses.
• Train GTAs in shared departmental equipment needed for teaching duties.
• Assist faculty with basic research laboratory maintenance needs.
• Coordinate with ITSS to maintain departmental computer lab.
• Assist with GTA scheduling as needed.

Maintain departmental collections, including inventory and curation of
samples and display cases (25%):|

• Curate departmental specimen and research samples on campus and at the
Farm.
• Maintain inventory of teaching samples and departmental display samples.
• Maintain departmental display cases.
• Inventory new samples.
• Maintain inventory of archived student research samples to ensure
availability for use by others.

The Department of Earth and Environmental Sciences at UMD is an

the earth’s processes, our physical world and our place in the long,
