We invite applications from highly motivated PhDs with an interest in
policy-relevant climate science and public outreach. The successful
applicant will be part of a Microsoft-funded research project
investigating the climate implications of temporary land-based carbon
storage. The position will involve:

• Design, execution and analysis of Earth system model simulations

• Preparation of scientific publications

• Preparation of a public-facing report in advance of COP 26

• Organization and facilitation of virtual round-table discussions

The successful applicant will work under the supervision of both Dr. H.
Damon Matthews at Concordia University in Montreal and Dr. Kirsten
Zickfeld at Simon Fraser University in Vancouver, Canada and have the
choice to reside at either University. Drs. Matthews and Zickfeld lead
dynamic research groups with extensive expertise in Earth system
modelling and climate-carbon cycle interactions, and have successfully
collaborated for many years.

Funding is available for one year, with possibility of renewal for one
additional year. The preferred start date is 1st August 2021.

Candidates with a PhD degree (or international equivalent) in climate
science, physical geography, environmental science or related
disciplines are invited to apply. Strong quantitative and
computational skills, demonstrated ability to publish work in
peer-reviewed journals, ability to work independently and excellent oral
and written communication skills are required. Experience running an
Earth system model of full or intermediate complexity is strongly
desirable, as is experience working within a stakeholder- engaged
research environment.

Concordia University and Simon Fraser University are strongly committed
to diversity within their community and especially welcome applications
from racialized persons / persons of colour, women, Indigenous Peoples,
persons with disabilities, people of all sexual orientations and gender
identities, and others who may contribute to the further diversification
of ideas.

For consideration, please send a single pdf document containing 1) a
1-page cover letter summarizing qualifications and experience relevant
to the advertised position, 2) a CV listing education, past
employment, research contributions including a publication list and
contact information of two academic references, and 3) a 2-page research
statement outlining research interests related to the advertised
position to Dr. H. Damon Matthews (damon.matthews at concordia.ca
<mailto:damon.matthews at concordia.ca>) and Dr. Kirsten
Zickfeld (kzickfel at sfu.ca).

Evaluation of applications will start immediately and will continue
until the position is filled.
