JOB DESCRIPTION SUMMARY
Geofinancial Analytics <geofinancial.com> is seeking a highly motivated
professional interested in conducting cutting-edge research and development
of sophisticated models for tracking atmospheric GHG sources via remote
sensing. Geofinancial is a science-driven benefit corporation whose civic
mission is to accelerate capital flows from climate stressors (like methane
super emitters in energy & food supply chains) to more sustainable
solutions by informing decisions and business practices with transparent,
objective facts.
You will be a key member of the Geofinancial’s Research & Development Team
to support algorithm development and other research activities for
detecting, measuring, and attributing GHG emissions from various ground
sources using a combination of ground- and satellite-based techniques.
These algorithms and workflows will be further operationalized and
automated to support continuous monitoring of GHG. A successful candidate
will have a graduate degree in atmospheric science, geophysics, earth
science, or a similar related field with prior experience in atmospheric
dynamics or chemistry. Experience in scientific scripting using Python/C++
is also desired, as is an ability to write for a technical and customer
audience. The incumbent will also be actively collaborating with the
Institute on the Environment at the University of Minnesota on various
projects.
The work is fast-paced, highly iterative, and continuously trading off
between what works and what is best. R&D typically involves rigorous
testing and fact checking at every step of the way. If you enjoy working
with data to build products and solve hard real-world environmental
problems in creative ways, you will fit right in.
Job Duties & Responsibilities
- Participate as an integral team member on multidisciplinary research
related to tracking GHG sources.
- Lead algorithm development for identifying, measuring, and attributing
atmospheric GHG using satellite data, including integration and comparison
with other spatial datasets.
- Ensure high quality of the projects' data products by developing QA/QC
strategies.
- Assess emerging technologies with an emphasis towards the adaptation of
new technologies for GHG tracking.
- Work closely with other team members to support developing a
satellite-based GHG monitoring framework.
- Prepare and deliver reports or presentations of research
projects/analysis results to project sponsors as appropriate.
- Contribute to peer-reviewed publications
- Contribute to training students, interns, and other employees.
- Support other project development efforts as needed.
- Collaborate with technical and non-technical staff in product development
and integration.
Required Qualifications
- Ph.D. degree in atmospheric science, geophysics, earth science, or a
similar related field, and 1-year related experience either as part of
degree program or post-degree; OR Master’s degree in atmospheric science,
geophysics, earth science, or a similar related field, and 3 years related
post-degree experience.
- Experience in inversion models and other related atmospheric models for
extracting GHG concentration, flow rate, etc. from remote (e.g., satellite)
observation.
- Experience in implementing mathematical algorithms in prototype software,
such as Python or R.
- Experience with the systematic evaluation of signal/data processing
algorithms.
- Experience evaluating the performance of algorithms on simulated and/or
measured datasets.
- Preferred Qualifications
- Experience with radiative transfer models.
- Experience in infrared remote sensing.
- Knowledge and experience in database management.
- Statistical analysis experience.
- Required Knowledge, Skills, and/or Abilities
- Highly motivated, self-starter.
- Eager to contribute to environmental sustainability using knowledge and
professional skills.
- Excellent interpersonal and oral/written communication skills.
- Demonstrated ability to participate in team projects that include diverse
perspectives, types of expertise, and experiences.
- Ability to take direction and work with minimum supervision.
- Experience in working within interdisciplinary teams with various levels
of scientific and technical expertise.
- Technical writing and documentation skills.
