Postdoctoral Scholar in Environmental Chemistry

The College of Wooster invites applications for a Postdoctoral Scholar in Environmental Chemistry to start as early as August 2021. We seek candidates with a strong interest in undergraduate education who are committed to mentoring undergraduate researchers.

This full-time position offers a combination of opportunities in research, teaching, and mentorship in a small liberal arts setting. The position is funded for up to two years, pursuant to satisfactory performance. The employee will be eligible to participate in professional development opportunities for visiting faculty and for Perry-Williams Postdoctoral Fellows supported by The Consortium for Faculty Diversity. Applicants should have a Ph.D. in chemistry or a closely related field by the start date. Prior experience in environmental, analytical, physical, and/or atmospheric chemistry research is essential, as is prior teaching experience with undergraduate students. Required skills are excellent communication, organization, attention to detail, and ability to work effectively both within a research team and independently.

The postdoctoral scholar will work in collaboration with Prof. Jennifer Faust on an NSF-funded research project that seeks to (1) identify and quantify pesticides and their degradation products in precipitation collected across Ohio, and (2) characterize multiphase oxidation reactions of pesticides in the lab. This research will make use of the College’s recently acquired quadrupole time-of-flight mass spectrometer. The employee will also contribute to teaching in our shared general chemistry curriculum and mentoring undergraduate research students. We are particularly interested in applicants who demonstrate a commitment to working within a diverse academic community. The college enrolls a diverse student body (24% domestic students of color and 17% international students) with a nationally-recognized Senior Independent Study program in which every student engages in mentored undergraduate research.

Applicants should submit a cover letter, curriculum vitae, and names and contact information for two to three references. The cover letter of no more than two pages should address the applicant’s relevant experience in research, teaching, and mentoring, including how the applicant has engaged and/or expects to engage with issues of diversity and inclusion in educational or research contexts. All materials should be submitted to jfaust at wooster.edu<mailto:jfaust at wooster.edu>. Please direct questions about the position to Prof. Jennifer Faust (jfaust at wooster.edu<mailto:jfaust at wooster.edu>). Review of applications will begin immediately and continue until the position is filled.

The College of Wooster is an independent college of the liberal arts and sciences with a commitment to inclusive excellence in undergraduate education.
