Where You Will Work:

Located in Boulder, Colorado, the National Center for Atmospheric Research (NCAR) is one of the world's premier scientific institutions, with an internationally recognized staff and research program dedicated to advancing knowledge, providing community-based resources, and building human capacity in the atmospheric and related sciences.  NCAR is sponsored by the National Science Foundation (NSF) and managed by the University Corporation for Atmospheric Research (UCAR).

Unlike other NCAR programs or divisions, the Advanced Study Program (ASP) does not have primary responsibility for any special area of NCAR science. Instead, the ASP mission, broadly defined, is to help NCAR (and the scientific communities it serves) prepare for the future. We work in support of other NCAR units, with these objectives:

*        Stimulating the intellect of the research community

*        Fostering the professional development of early career scientists

*        Promoting advanced scientific educational opportunities at NCAR

*        Focusing attention on emerging areas of science

*        Facilitating interactions between NCAR, universities, and the broader community

What You Will Do:

Conducts original research in areas broadly related to atmospheric science or other research areas at NCAR and documents that research in publications. Seeks to broaden their understanding of atmospheric science and other research areas at NCAR by collaborating with scientists and other postdoctoral researchers at NCAR. Contributes to the ASP community through service and outreach.

Responsibilities of this position include:

*        Conducts independent or collaborative research leading to results worthy of publication in scientific journals.

*        Learns about aspects of NCAR science outside the past experience of the fellow by interacting and collaborating with other postdoctoral fellows and with the NCAR scientific staff.

*        Documents the results of the research, preferably in journal publications, and publicizes those results in seminars and conference presentations.

*        May participate in writing of grant proposals, and the review of scientific papers and proposals.

*        Participates in seminars, research reports, and other organized scientific discussions by ASP and NCAR.

*        Participates in and contributes to activities that advance the professional growth of the fellows. These activities may include professional development workshops, contributing to NCAR/UCAR educational programs, serving on ASP and NCAR committees, attending workshops.

*        May serve as a peer mentor to other postdocs or mentor undergraduate and graduate students.

*        Seeks advice on the feasibility of this plan from the NCAR scientific staff, but assumes primary responsibility for selecting and planning the project.

What You Need:

Education and Years of Experience:

*        Applicant must have a Ph.D. or Sc. D. degree granted in an area related to NCAR, or must be able to complete such a degree and finish all thesis revisions and defense before starting the NCAR appointment.

Knowledge, Skills, and Abilities:

*        Demonstrate a broad base of established and evolving knowledge within the Earth system sciences and detailed knowledge of the specific research area.

*        Ability to design sound research protocols, safely perform the techniques necessary to conduct and analyze this research, and navigate the scientific publishing processes.

*        Effective oral and written communication skills.

*        Ability to work independently and as part of a diverse team.

Your statement of research should clearly articulate what you propose to research at NCAR and why you would benefit from doing this work at NCAr and with guidance from NCAR staff. The research statement can not be more than three pages (12 pt font, single spaced, including figures and references.)

2. Broader impacts statement

Please describe the broader impacts of your research. Broader impacts may be accomplished through your research itself, through the activities that are directly related to your research, or through activities that are complementary to your proposal. We only need your graduate transcripts, and they can be unofficial. If you attended a US institution and your transcript contains your social security number, please be sure to block out that number before scanning. If you attended graduate school at an institution that does not have transcripts, please provide a list of your graduate coursework and any grades/marks received.

6. Select a preferred NCAR unit

In order to help us properly route your applications materials for review, you will be required to identify at least one lab at NCAR that is relevant to your research. You may select a second lab if your interests span multiple programs. Please provide some reasoning for your choice. 7. Letters of Reference

As part of the application process, we ask for three letters of recommendation from your references. The ASP Application system will automatically send an email requesting a letter of reference to the email address that you enter into the system for a reference, the email is sent immediately after you click 'submit reference'. You will receive notice from the system when each of your references have successfully uploaded a letter on your behalf. It is important that you enter the contact information for your references as soon as possible so that they will have time to write and upload the letter before the deadline!
