Summary/Purpose:
The Summit science technicians perform hands-on field science on the top of the Greenland ice sheet. If you have technical instrumentation skills, excel in remote small-group settings, and can perform in challenging polar conditions, join the science technicians at Summit Station.
Summit science technicians perform in-the-field science support on behalf of research teams who have ongoing projects at Summit Station, Greenland. The technicians operate, maintain, troubleshoot and repair scientific instrumentation, collect physical samples, and perform spatial surveys. They climb instrument towers, dig sample trenches, and travel off-station to study sites. And they are meticulous in following science protocols, documenting their work, and communicating with science teams.
We are looking for SEASONAL employees to deploy approximately April 6 - July 26, May 29-October 20, and July 6-October 20, 2021.
Essential Duties and Responsibilities:

  *   Safely conduct year-round outdoor work in an extreme polar environment.
  *   Perform, science project tasking, reliably and accurately, as described in Polar Field guidelines and in researcher protocols.
  *   Operate, maintain, troubleshoot and repair a diverse suite of scientific instrumentation, such as aerosol and gas analyzers, meteorological sensors, radars, lidars, radiometers, spectrometers, and other atmospheric sensing instruments.
  *   Perform air or snow sampling, processing and documentation.
  *   Communicate with researchers and contractor staff regarding project status, issues, or abnormal site conditions.
  *   Maintain an accurate log of events that could impact science projects.
  *   Coordinate shipments of science samples and resupply/retrograde materials.
  *   Provide a weekly report to science project manager.
  *   Compose an end-of-season report and review with science project manager.
  *   Transfer information between incoming and outgoing science technicians at the start and close of the season.
  *   Adhere to the Summit Station Accident Prevention Plan (APP) including: completion, maintenance and updates of Activity Hazard Analysis (AHA) for relevant tasking.
  *   Report all incidents (injury, illness, near miss, property damage, etc.) immediately to the Summit site supervisor.
  *   Participate in daily morning planning meeting with station personnel.
  *   Participate in weekly safety meeting with station personnel.
  *   Participate in station operations, maintenance, cleaning, and cooking tasking.
  *   Other duties as assigned.
Minimum Qualifications (Prior to Employment):
Education and Experience:
Combination of education, experience and training equivalent to a college degree in science plus 5 years relevant work experience that includes the following:

  *   Operation, maintenance and troubleshooting of analytical scientific instrumentation.
  *   Maintenance and repair of light mechanical equipment such as sample plumbing, vacuum pumps, fans, enclosures.
  *   Diagnosis and repair of low-voltage electronics and cables using multimeter, oscilloscope and soldering iron.
  *   Meticulous technical communication and solid language/math skills for coordinating diagnostics.
  *   Adherence to and maintenance of standard operating procedures.
  *   Strong fluency with Windows operating system and MS365 applications.
  *   Extended-duration remote outdoor work.
  *   Work over non-standard hours.
Licensure(s)/Certifications/Travel Documents:

  *   Authorization to work in the U.S. is required.  Polar Field Services cannot sponsor employment based work visas.
  *   Availability to remain at the remote field site for the duration of employment.
  *   Regular and predictable onsite attendance as well as availability to work extended hours, including after-hours/weekends and on-call.
  *   Possession of current and valid US passport.
Preferred Qualifications:

  *   Scientific field work in atmospheric and cryospheric disciplines.
  *   Fluency with UNIX-like computer systems and command line interface.
  *   Familiarity with Python, R, or other programming languages.
  *   Maintenance and programming of Campbell Scientific data acquisition systems.
  *   Ascent and work on towers of 60 feet height.
  *   Preparation and release of sounding balloons.
  *   Familiarity with general chemistry laboratory equipment and techniques.
  *   Familiarity with networking equipment including routers, hubs, switches, cabling, network cards, etc.
  *   General construction, mechanical fabrication, and repair skills.
  *   Safe work history in extreme polar environments.
  *   Positive work history within isolated, long-duration, small-crew settings.

Work Schedule:
The science technician position requires the ability and willingness to work unusual hours, following the requirements of the science projects and remote station operations. Science technicians typically work a 7-day-a-week schedule, with science support duties present each but reduced hours on Sundays.

The field schedule varies depending on weather. Adverse outdoor weather conditions may result in several light-duty days for crew safety, followed by several days of catch-up work. Evening work may be required for weather observations or balloon releases, or due to unplanned events such as scientific instrumentation failures. Crew members remain on-call at all times during the season to respond to medical emergencies or power outages.
Required Travel:
This position includes travel and deployment to a remote, high-altitude (10,550 ft AMSL), Arctic field station for the work assignment.
Work Environment/Conditions
Outdoor working conditions are extreme and challenging. Temperatures may be below  -80°F. Strong winds and low-visibility conditions may be present. When at field sites, employees will sleep in tents, dorms or other types of community housing. Food may come from restaurants, self made or from a cook, and food selection may be limited. Showers, laundry and other typical amenities may be restricted or eliminated.  Transport may include but is not limited to aircraft, trucks and snow machines.

  *   Adheres to Health, Safety and Environment policies in planning and execution of activities.
  *   Follows tower safety policies and best practices surrounding climbing, spotting, and rescue on towers.
  *   Acts in accordance with Summit Station Summer and Winter Travel Policies.
Physical Demands/Requirements:
Please note:  This position requires you to "physically qualify" (PQ).  This means you must pass the National Science Foundation required physical/dental exams and drug screen prior to deployment.

  *   Able to move items up to 50lbs independently and 50+ lbs with mechanical assistance
  *   Able to frequently shovel snow

  *   Ability to hike off trail, long distances, on uneven terrain, at remote locations, in all types of weather, carrying packs weighing up to 40lbs.
  *   Ability to work and live at altitudes of up to 11,000 feet.
  *   Ability to withstand exposure to fumes, dust, and noise.
  *   Ability to ascend/descend stairs, ladders, and instrument towers up to 60 feet hight.
  *   Ability to wear face coverings, bulky extreme cold weather gear, hard hats, steel-toes boots, and other PPE when required.
