Application Deadline: This position will be posted until filled.

Term: This is a 2-year term position with possible extension.

Relocation: Partial relocation is available for this position.

Work Authorization: UCAR/NCAR will support a work visa to fill this position.

Where You Will Work:

Climate and Global Dynamics Laboratory (CGD<http://www.cgd.ucar.edu/>) is part of the National Center for Atmospheric Research (NCAR<https://ncar.ucar.edu/>).

Its mission is to:

1. Discover the key processes in each component of the Earth's climate system and the interactions among them;

2. Represent this understanding in models and thereby provide a basis for prediction of climate; and

3. Apply this understanding and these models to scientific problems of societal relevance.

What You Will Do:

This position supports a collaborative project to develop a high resolution of CESM called 'Earthworks' which aims for a global 4km non-hydrostatic atmosphere model, embedded in an Earth System Model with high resolution land and ocean. The incumbent will lead and / or contribute to: i) Simulations and analysis of Earthworks high resolution configurations of CESM, especially focused on the atmosphere from weather to climate scales, ii) analysis and modification of CESM2 atmospheric physical parameterizations to work with Earthworks configurations and resolution and iii) communication among the NCAR and collaborators Earthworks team, and within CESM.

The project partners include researchers at NCAR in MMM and CISL. Outside collaborators include CSU and Los Alamos National Laboratory. This collaborative project aims to provide a new configuration of CESM at high resolution. As such the incumbent will interact with researchers from the partner institutions to perform coordinated design and analyses of model simulations.

Broad priorities will be determined in consultation with the NCAR investigators of the project. The incumbent is expected to operate with a significant degree of independence.

Responsibilities:

Under general guidance, conducts independent and collaborative research to accomplish the goals of the project:
* Development of an Earthworks high resolution CESM configuration, focusing on the atmosphere.
* May design and perform coordinated numerical simulations in support of the project.
* Analyzes climate model and observational data sets where appropriate.
*        Develops new diagnostics products.
* Revises the research plan as needed.

Takes the lead and participates in writing of scientific journal articles and formal reports, documenting the findings of the project. Presents results at relevant meetings.

Documents experimental and diagnostics / analysis procedures.

Interacts with the project collaborators and partners regularly for coordinated / joint analysis and experimentation.

What You Need:

Education and Years of Experience
* Ph.D. in oceanic, atmospheric, or related earth sciences or in applied mathematics, physics or engineering.

Desired:
* 2 years of additional, relevant experience in at least one of these areas.

Knowledge, Skills, and Abilities
* Understanding, through published or academic work, of modeling complex, geophysical processes.
* Demonstrated ability using and diagnosing global atmosphere/climate models models
* Evidence of knowledge of atmospheric physical processes in models of weather and/or climate
* Experience with the CESM and its component models, especially the Atmosphere.
* Knowledge of the LINUX operating system and its variants, including skill in writing shell scripts.
* Demonstrated knowledge of graphical analysis tools, e.g., Python.
* Knowledge of data analysis methodologies for global climate models
* Excellent oral and written communication skills.
Applicant Notes:
* An Inclusion Statement will be required for all applicants advancing to an in-person interview. If requested, this statement should address past efforts, as well as future vision and plans to advocate for and advance diversity, equity, and inclusion in the organization and/or field of work.
* A pre-employment screening is conducted in conjunction with an offer for employment. This screening may involve verifying or reviewing any of the following relevant information: restricted parties screening, employment verification, performance records of internal candidates, education verification, reference checks, verification of professional licenses, certifications, and Motor Vehicle Records. UCAR complies with the Fair Credit Reporting Act (FCRA).
* Please note that while the position description details both minimum requirements as well as desired skills and experience, we want to remind applicants that you do not need to have all the desired skills and experience to be considered for this role. If you have the passion for the work along with experience in a related field, you are encouraged to apply. We can provide on-the-job training for the rest.
