 Summary:
We invite applications for a postdoctoral research position to study glaciers in High Mountain Asia. The selected candidate will conduct glacier modeling, analyze glacier dynamics, evaluate remote sensing datasets (optical/radar/ICESat) and develop tools for integrating remote sensing data and model outputs. The selected candidate will be involved in ongoing projects that include glacier mapping, glacier lake outburst flood, glacier modeling, debris thickness, etc. This position provides an opportunity to grow your skillset and also allows you to bring new skills and unique methods to study the impact of climate change on these glaciers. Expertise in machine learning techniques and coding experience is not required but strongly preferred. It is important for scientists to use their expertise for societal benefits. Thus, the candidate is also expected to support ongoing efforts in using geospatial techniques for societal impact analysis, such as "Rights for Water," primarily related to glacier meltwater or other human rights violations.
The appointment will be for 1 year, with continuation pending funding and progress. The position is eligible for benefits.
Minimum Qualifications:
* Ph.D. in Earth or Environmental sciences/Engineering (e.g., geology, geography, geosciences, glaciology, civil engineering, computer science). ABD at the time of application is accepted, but Ph.D. is required by the start date.
* Candidate must have experience using GIS and remote sensing software and data products in analyzing glaciers.
* Publication record as lead author in peer-reviewed journals.
Preferred Qualifications:
* Ability to use at least some combination of these software/modeling tools (e.g., Google Earth Engine, HEC-RAS, FlowR, RAMMS, GeoClaw, COSI-Corr, SfM) and Python/Matlab/R programming for data analysis.
* Ability to think creatively and work independently and in a team.
* Articulated interest in and flexibility necessary to respond quickly to time-sensitive research requirements.
* Articulated interest in using geospatial techniques for human rights and/or other aspects of social and broader significance.
* Excellent verbal and written communication, organizational, and interpersonal skills.
* Record of publication in a high-impact top-tier journal.
* Interest in collaborating with and mentoring students.
