The Colorado Avalanche Information Center (CAIC) exists to promote avalanche safety by reducing the impact of avalanches on recreation, industry and transportation in the State through a program of forecasting and education. This position will produce and write avalanche forecasts, create and deliver education programs, collect field data, and interact with professional and volunteer avalanche and rescue groups.
Description of Job

NOTE: THIS IS A FULL-TIME POSITION WITH THE POTENTIAL TO WORK REDUCED HOURS DURING THE SUMMER MONTHS AS FUNDING AND WORKLOAD DICTATE. THIS POSITION IS NOT ELIGIBLE FOR OVERTIME.

OPEN TO STATE OF COLORADO RESIDENTS ONLY

This position, which will work from a home office and at the CAIC's office in Boulder, produces and writes avalanche forecasts, creates and delivers education programs, collects field data, interacts with professional and volunteer avalanche and rescue groups and demonstrates an understanding of atmospheric physics and dynamics and snow physics and avalanche dynamics. The five main functions of this position are: 1) Provides weather and avalanche forecasts for highway maintenance operations; 2) Provides public weather and avalanche forecasts for backcountry recreation; 3) Trains state employees, contractors, and general public in snow, weather and avalanche safety;  4) Collects field data to support the highway and backcountry weather and avalanche forecasting programs; and 5) Installs and maintains remote weather instrumentation and works with geographic information systems (GIS).

Avalanche forecaster - collects and analyzes weather and snow data, describe specific events or patterns in snow properties and avalanche activity in an avalanche forecast. Also interprets weather forecast products for local effects on snow and avalanche conditions. Develops new methods and techniques for utilizing the CAIC's dataset.

Educator - Trains CDOT personnel and contractors on avalanche potential within their highway corridor. Develops new methods and tools to teach avalanche safety to CDOT personnel. Teaches snow, weather and avalanche science to CDOT personnel and backcountry users.

Field Data Collection - Collects data on the current physical, mechanical and thermal state of the snowpack. Analyzes and interprets these data to determine the structural and mechanical stability of the snowpack. Uses the assessment of snowpack properties and weather forecasts to determine current and future avalanche potential. Collects and uses avalanche occurrence data to determine the current and future character of avalanche activity. Collects weather data. All of these data must be recorded in a central computer database and used for the avalanche forecasting portion of the position.

Automated Weather Stations and GIS systems - Installs and maintains automated weather stations. This includes understanding CSI measurement acquisition computer language and writing and editing programs using the Logger Net software package. Compiles and installs these programs so that they run the data logger computers and remote weather instruments. Wires data logger instrument panels and establishes phone, RF, and Ethernet communications between weather and base station units. Also diagnoses and maintains communication between a central computer server and the base stations. Builds and uses applications in Esri GIS platforms.

Minimum Requirements
Graduation from an accredited college or university with a bachelor's degree in a physical science such as Physics, Engineering, Meteorology, Physical Geography, Hydrology, or a closely related field AND a total of one year of professional avalanche forecasting experience which must have included using web-based software related to avalanche forecasting. Must be proficient in Microsoft Office Suite and Google Apps. NOTE: If experience was gained as part of a larger mixed assignment, please indicate the number of hours per week specific avalanche forecasting duties were performed.

Substitutions
 A combination of work experience in the occupational field or specialized subject area of the work assigned to the job, which provided the same kind, amount and level of knowledge acquired in the required education, may be substituted on a year-for year basis for the bachelor's degree.

Conditions of Employment
·        Former employees of the State of Colorado MUST have concluded employment in good standing to be eligible for rehire.
·        Must possess and maintain (or be willing and able to obtain and maintain) a current Wilderness First Responder or Wilderness Emergency Medical Technician certification or higher and to perform avalanche and backcountry rescue
·        Must possess and maintain (or be willing and able to obtain and maintain) a CPR certification
·        Must be willing and able to respond to critical work tasks from October 1st - May 31st
·        Must be willing and able to perform avalanche and backcountry rescue
·        Must be willing and able to work full-time as required
·        Must be willing and able to work 4:00 a.m. to 2:00 p.m., as necessary
·        Must be willing and able to exert up to 100 lbs of force occasionally and/or up to 50 lbs of force frequently to move objects
·        Must be willing and able to obtain a Type I Explosive Permit with an avalanche endorsement, which will require a background check
·        Must possess a certificate of completion of Level III, PRO2, or similar professional avalanche training course
·        Must be willing and able to work with explosives
·        Must be willing and able to tolerate noise and vibration related to explosives
·        Must be willing and able to pass a background check for access to the National Weather Service - Weather Forecast Office
·        Must possess and maintain a valid state of Colorado driver's license
·        Must be willing and able to travel within the state and occasional out-of-state travel
·        Must be willing and able to use own vehicle for winter travel throughout Colorado when a State fleet vehicle is not available
·        Ability to travel on mountain roads and backcountry areas during the winter
·        Ability to travel on high very steep exposed portions of mountainous terrain
·        Must be willing and able to tolerate hot and cold weather and wet, humid and windy conditions
·        Must be willing and able to tolerate exposure to atmospheric conditions such as fumes, dusts, gases
·        Must be willing and able to tolerate exposure to radiant energy
·        Although Personal Protective Equipment is supplied, must possess equipment suitable for backcountry travel in avalanche terrain

Preferred qualifications
·        Familiarity with atmospheric physics and dynamics
·        Familiarity with snow physics and avalanche dynamics
·        Experience with automated environmental measuring equipment
·        Experience in technical writing
·        Experience in education of people of all ages
·        Experience with MS Windows and/or LINUX computer systems
·        Experience with desktop and mobile GIS systems
