Required Qualifications (as evidenced by an attached resume):
Ph.D. (foreign equivalent or higher) in Marine Science, Environmental Science, or Chemistry in hand by January 2020. Familiarity with mercury analysis.
Preferred Qualifications:
Familiarity with mercury analysis instrumentation.
Brief Description of Duties:
Postdoctoral Associate will be analyzing mercury and other trace metals and metalloids in diverse fish, shellfish, and seaweeds collected from New York's marine waters over a one-year period. Attempts will be made to compare contaminant concentrations in biological tissues between seasons. Focus will primarily be on mercury in fish due to its danger to public health, but other potentially toxic metals (e.g., copper, lead, cadmium) will also be assessed in various fish and shellfish that are commonly consumed as seafood and as indicators for the health of the marine environment. Metal analyses will use state-of-the-art instrumentation to establish baselines for each of these elements in each species. Statistical treatment of the data will determine if there are any consistent relationships between concentrations of specific metals in biota.
Essential Duties:
* Mercury analysis of seafood samples using a state-of-the-art mercury analyzer.
* Prepare samples by identifying, dissecting, weighing, and freeze drying.
* Field sampling, including research cruises on board the R/V Seawolf.
* Data analysis using statistical analyses.
* Preparation of reports.
* Other duties or projects as assigned as appropriate to rank and departmental mission, which may include attending Scientific Conferences and Meetings.
Special Notes:
This is a full time appointment. FLSA Exempt position, not eligible for the overtime provisions of the FLSA. Minimum salary threshold must be met to maintain FLSA exemption.
