Primary Function of Organizational Unit
The Department of Marine Earth and Atmospheric Sciences (MEAS) includes approximately 35 faculty, 75 graduate students and 220 undergraduates involved in basic and applied studies of Earth Systems. The department offers BA, BS, MS, and PhD degrees. Our principal concentrations include weather prediction, air quality, air-sea interactions, storm and climate modeling, hydrology, geochemistry, oceanography, surface processes and regional geology.
The multi-disciplinary nature of our department lends itself to the study of such problems as prediction of severe weather (e.g. hurricanes), coastal erosion, pollution of surface and groundwater, and global climate change. While basic research is always important, many of our research projects also have direct application to current issues such as water quality/water supply, seafood harvests, climate change, weather prediction and land use.
MEAS offers degree programs in marine sciences, geology and meteorology. Our programs include many tracks in each of our program areas and thus provide the opportunity for an education broader than bachelor’s degrees in more traditional departments.
Although our faculty are heavily involved in research, all courses in our major are normally taught by regular faculty and all faculty are involved in teaching. Involvement of undergraduates and graduate students in research is a major emphasis. Typical class size for major courses is 20 students or less.
Essential Job Duties
The Department of Marine, Earth, and Atmospheric Sciences (MEAS) at North Carolina State University (NC State) intends to fill a tenure-track faculty position in environmental volcanology/petrology.
Desirable expertise includes research employing observation, experiments, and modeling to investigate the origin of magmatism in different tectonic settings, the role of volatiles in volcanic eruptions and short and/or long-term climate change and geohazards. The anticipated start date is August 16, 2020. Hiring will be at the Assistant Professor level.
Course offerings may include undergraduate or graduate classes in mineralogy, hard rock petrology, numerical methods and modeling, geohazards, geothermal energy or other classes commensurate with the candidate’s interest and expertise.
Opportunities exist for disciplinary and interdisciplinary interactions with a wide range of scientists at NC State. Affiliated with the College of Sciences, MEAS is one of the largest interdisciplinary geoscience departments in the nation. - Applicants must hold a Ph.D. degree in Earth or related sciences.
