Location: In light of the COVID-19 pandemic, temporary remote work is permitted, however this position may require the employee to carry out occasional tasks in-person at the Mesa Lab located in Boulder, CO, so relocation to Boulder or surrounding area is required. The position will require full-time in-person work at the Mesa Lab after pandemic restrictions are lifted.
Where You Will Work:
The UCAR Center for Science Education (UCAR SciEd) serves the geoscience community by amplifying and complementing the work of the National Science Foundation's National Center for Atmospheric Research (NCAR) and University Corporation for Atmospheric Research (UCAR) member universities by reaching our audiences: K-12 educators, university faculty, students, and the public through excellence in educational programs and experiences.
What You Will Do:
Bring expertise in both in-person and virtual science education resource development and programming, as well as knowledge of atmospheric and Earth system science content. Serve as a core member of the School and Public Programs (SPP) team in the UCAR Center for Science Education (SciEd), based at the NCAR Mesa Lab in Boulder, CO, and working remotely as needed. Collaborate on the development and revision of educational content for virtual programs, in-person learning activities, and public exhibits. Participate in the planning, coordination, facilitation, and evaluation of SPP tours for both the general public and special groups, preK-12 field trips, and public science events. Apply best practices in science education and communication in all aspects of this position.
Responsibilities:
Development of educational content
Under the direction of the Outreach and Training Specialist III, is responsible for:
*         Staying current on and advising the SPP staff regarding best practices and emerging technologies in Virtual STEM education
*         Developing and revising preK-12 virtual educational programming content
*         Developing and revising preK-12 live educational content, including on-site field trip curriculum and materials for public educational events
*         Creating hands-on science exhibits to be installed at the NCAR Mesa Lab and other NCAR facilities
Implementation of education and outreach programs as part of the School and Public Programs team.
*         Acts as an integral part of the SPP core team to deliver public tours, PreK-12 school field trips, and outreach events representing UCAR|NCAR science.
*         Plays a key role in the delivery of virtual educational programming for preK-12 audiences, using a variety of platforms and technologies
*         Engages in ongoing efforts to stay current on STEM education practices, atmospheric science research (particularly UCAR|NCAR science), and best practices in science communication
*         With the SPP team, participates in regular processes of self, peer, and programmatic evaluation to ensure best practices in classroom management and educational approaches.
Other SciEd and School & Public Programs tasks
*         Contributes to social media engagement on behalf of UCAR SciEd.
*         As needed, assists the Outreach & Training Specialist III in organizing logistical aspects of SPP education programs, including monitoring requests and scheduling of tours, field trips, outreach, and special events.
*         As needed, supports the Outreach & Training Specialist III in the logistical coordination of K-12 and public events.
*         Works with the Outreach & Training Specialist III to assess the needs of various audiences and the most effective ways to serve them.
*         Attends and participates in regular SciEd meetings and retreats, UCAR Community Programs staff meetings, and other meetings as necessary.
*         Represents SPP and SciEd within local STEM education networks.
*         Contributes to proposal development as needed.
What You Need:
Education and Years of Experience
*         Bachelor's degree in a relevant academic discipline (STEM, education, communication, or interpretation field) plus five years of relevant experience, or an equivalent combination of education and experience.
Knowledge, Skills, and Abilities
*         Knowledge of and experience with common virtual/online educational programming platforms, best practices, and technology, and adept at learning new technologies and platforms
*         K-12 or informal education experience with strong classroom/group management skills
*         Knowledge of STEM content, especially related to NCAR|UCAR and Earth System Science, and ability to convey that knowledge to a wide variety of audiences through resource development, communication, and educational programming
*         Familiarity with issues of diversity, equity, and inclusion, and ability to work effectively with colleagues and members of the public with diverse needs and abilities
*         Strong interpersonal skills and ability to work as a member of a team
*         Excellent oral, written, and presentation communication skills
*         Excellent public relations skills
*         Highly skilled in independently organizing, coordinating, and prioritizing a variety of tasks, paying attention to detail, and ensuring tasks are completed accurately and in a timely fashion
*         Skill in using word processing, database, and presentation software such as MS Word, Excel, and PowerPoint
*         Comfortable with Google Apps including Google Docs, Google Forms, Google Sheets, and Google Drive
*         Available for occasional evening and weekend duties and occasional travel
Desired, but not required:
*         Professional experience with common and emerging social media platforms
*         Familiarity with Adobe Creative Suite
*         Familiarity with visual communication/graphic design tools and approaches
