The Helmholtz Centre Potsdam GFZ German Research Centre for Geosciences is
the national research centre for Earth sciences in Germany. With approx.
1180 employees, the GFZ is conducting interdisciplinary research on the
“System Earth” and the influence of humans on the planet. As a member of
the Helmholtz Association, it is part of Germany’s largest science
organization.
For Department 5 “Geomorphology, Hydrology and Paleoclimatology”, Section
5.1 “Geomorphology” we invite applications for a
PhD Student Reference No. 57/51/15 D
http://www.gfz-potsdam.de/en/career/job-offers/job/575115-d-phd-student/
The aim of the research is to obtain high-resolution (i.e. decadal) records
of continental paleohydrological changes in northern, central and southern
Europe at the end of the last ice age to understand the impact of abrupt
changes in temperature on the water cycle. For this, organic-geochemical
and stable isotope-based methods (e.g. biomarkers δD and δ13C ) as well as
spatial data analysis and modelling studies are to be employed.
The research is part of the project STEEPclim (Spatiotemporal evolution of
the hydrological cycle throughout the European continent during past abrupt
climate changes), which is funded by the European Research Council, ERC,
under an ERC Consolidator Grant to Dr. Dirk Sachse. The successful
candidate will work as part of a team of several researchers in this ERC
project.
Your tasks:
-
organisation of and participation in field work to obtain sediment cores
from lakes
-
preparation of lipid extracts from sediments and analysis by gas
chromatography-mass spectrometry (GC-
MS) and GC-coupled isotope-ratio mass spectrometry (GC-IRMS)
-
development of methods for biomarker analysis (e.g. HPLC-MS)
-
evaluation, visualization, interpretation and spatial analysis of data
and results
Your qualifications:
-
Master’s degree (or equivalent) in geosciences and/or geochemistry
-
experience with organic-(geo)chemical and/or stable isotope-based
methods and analysis (GC-MS, GC-
IRMS, HPLC-MS)
-
experience with spatial data analysis (e.g. GIS) is an advantage
-
good command of written and spoken English
-
interest in research in a multidisciplinary and international environment
Start date: 01.11.2015
Duration: 1+2 years
Work hours: part-time (75%; currently 29.25 hrs/week)
Salary: EG 13 TVöD-Bund (Ost)
You can expect a diverse and challenging job in an international work
environment that is characterized by exciting research projects. The
compatibility of work and family life is of particular concern to the GFZ.
Therefore, it offers the opportunity for flexible work- hours and
workplaces. Moreover, there is a kindergarten located on the research
campus.
The GFZ is a partner of Geo.X (www.geo-x.net), and thus it is well
connected with other geoscience institutions in Potsdam und Berlin. Geo.X
forms the largest regional cluster of geoscientific expertise in Europe and
offers excellent opportunities for cooperation and development.
Please submit your application by 15.09.2015 quoting reference no. 57/51/15
D via email to applications at gfz-potsdam.de. Please combine your application
documents into a single PDF file with a size of up to 3 megabytes.
