Where You Will Work:

The JCSDA is a multi-agency research center, hosted by the University
Corporation for Atmospheric Research (UCAR) and UCAR Community Programs
(UCP), committed to improving and accelerating the quantitative use of
research and operational satellite data in weather, ocean, climate, and
environmental analysis and prediction systems. The interagency partnership
assimilates many types of data from conventional and satellite sources by
creating integrated modeling systems. The JCSDA transitions this research
to operational and university communities through a robust data
infrastructure and open-source software.

What You Will Do:

This two-year appointment provides a postdoctoral opportunity to conduct
research related to the Global Navigation Satellite System (GNSS) remote
sensing for Earth science. This position will provide scientific support to
the studies on the observation errors and quality controls of radio
occultation (RO) observation, and, furthermore, studies to optimize the
GNSS-RO data assimilation. This work will be performed using the Unified
Forward Operator (UFO) as part of the Joint Effort for Data Assimilation
Integration (JEDI). JEDI is a new data assimilation system being developed
at Joint Center for Satellite Data Assimilation (JCSDA) and slated to be a
next-generation system at the National Oceanic and Atmospheric
Administration (NOAA), the National Aeronautics and Space
Administration (NASA),
Navy, Air Force, and the UK Met Office, as well as a community system for
academia and the private sector.

This position will be a part of the JCSDA Observations Team and will
collaborate with the COSMIC program. This approach capitalizes on close
collaboration between RO processing/retrieval and DA experts at UCAR and
offers a path to the operational implementation of the developments at NOAA
via the JCSDA. The second year of the position is conditional on
first-year performance in meeting the objectives of the position.

Responsibilities:

   - Work with JCSDA and partners agencies scientists and software
engineers and build generic observation error generation package as part
   of JEDI
   - Generate observation error for applications, optimize performance,
   evaluate analysis, and forecast impacts
   - Provide support to JEDI multiple operator comparison and quality
   control studies.
   - Provide support to further develop the JEDI UFO for assimilating
observations using GNSS remote sensing techniques.
   - Survey and evaluate existing and developmental observation error
models from JCSDA partners and other meteorological centers as well as new
   technologies from the research community.
   - Present and discuss the results with the project lead and team
members. Takes the lead in preparing project reports and prepares
scientific results for publication in peer-reviewed journals and for
   presentation at meetings and conferences.
