Have you wanted to try out a new idea but you need to get to the edge of space to test it? Do you need to get above the atmosphere to make a measurement (in situ or remote sensing)? Does the long project lifetime for sounding rockets or satellites mean that, for you, getting students involved is impractical? Would you like to provide students (undergraduates and graduate students) quick turn-around opportunities for research, development and engineering?
We invite you to attend our 2021 Individual CEDAR Workshop "Commercial suborbital applications" on Tuesday 22 June, 2021 at 13:00-15:00 (MDT). This workshop will provide updates from Blue Origin, Virgin Galactic and community members, followed by open discussion of potential applications and possible funding opportunities for these novel new spacecraft.
- Several companies (Blue Origin<https://www.blueorigin.com/>, Virgin Galactic<https://www.virgingalactic.com/research/>, Masten Space Systems<https://masten.aero/>, etc.) have built fully reusable (crewed and uncrewed) launch vehicles that are reaching altitudes above 100km.
- These new platforms offer relatively low-cost payload flight opportunities (at $200K, $100K and even lower) that guarantee safe return of the payload.
- Relatively benign flight environment allows for application of lower TRL instruments and experiments - essentially moving the laboratory environment to suborbital altitudes.
- Low cost, rapid development cycles and frequent flight rates provide an excellent opportunity to more rapidly, effectively and efficiently train the next generation of scientists, engineers, and managers as well as open up new paths for first-time Principal Investigators to acquire meaningful spaceflight experience.
Commercial suborbital has finally arrived with human-occupied suborbital flights. This means that such suborbital flights will become routine.
