A position is available to lead an initiative in space physics within Physics & Astronomy at the University of Southampton. While outstanding candidates from all areas of research relating to the broad field of space physics will be considered, we are especially interested in a candidate who will develop a strong independent research programme that builds on the well-established Southampton research activities of the present Astronomy and Space Environment Physics group. The candidate will be encouraged to work with other groups in the university which use space-based observations, such as Aeronautics, Oceanography and Geography. We are keen to extend cross-disciplinary research in fields such as Space Weather, and energy transfer in the atmosphere, including the region accessible to space-borne missions, with possible collaborations between engineering, space science and modelling communities.
The Astronomy and Space Environment Physics groups at Southampton have wide-ranging international collaborations involving large ground-based facilities (e.g. EISCAT, LOFAR, SALT) and space missions (e.g. INTEGRAL). The Space Environment Physics group has state-of-the-art optical instruments sited in the high Arctic, which are used in conjunction with both radar and satellite observations to study magnetosphere-ionosphere interactions, and in particular the physics of small-scale auroral processes. They are major users of the EISCAT radars, which measure the high latitude ionosphere. The Astronomy group's observational expertise has increased with its significant involvement in LOFAR, one of the SKA pathfinders. Physics and Astronomy are part of the Faculty of Physical and Applied Sciences (FPAS), one of the UK's top science faculties. Candidates interested in hardware or software development will benefit from interactions with Electronics and Computer Science which is also within FPAS.
The successful applicant is expected to contribute to the teaching in Physics & Astronomy, and take a major role in the development of the astronomy and space physics research programs within FPAS. The starting salary is negotiable, with funding for travel and computing hardware available.
The salary is in the range £35,244 - £44,607 per annum. Exceptional candidates will be considered for more senior appointments.
