 of Southampton. While outstanding candidates from all areas of research relating to the broad field of space physics will be considered, we are especially interested in a candidate who will develop a strong independent research programme that builds on the
 well-established Southampton research activities of the present Astronomy and Space Environment Physics group. The candidate will be encouraged to work with other groups in the university which use space-based observations, such as Aeronautics, Oceanography
 and Geography. We are keen to extend cross-disciplinary research in fields such as Space Weather, and energy transfer in the atmosphere, including the region accessible to space-borne missions, with possible collaborations between engineering, space science

 involving large ground-based facilities (e.g. EISCAT, LOFAR, SALT) and space missions (e.g. INTEGRAL). The Space Environment Physics group has state-of-the-art optical instruments sited in the high Arctic, which are used in conjunction with both radar and
 satellite observations to study magnetosphere-ionosphere interactions, and in particular the physics of small-scale auroral processes. They are major users of the EISCAT radars, which measure the high latitude ionosphere. The Astronomy group&#8217;s observational
 expertise has increased with its significant involvement in LOFAR, one of the SKA pathfinders. Physics and Astronomy are part of the Faculty of Physical and Applied Sciences (FPAS), one of the UK's top science faculties. Candidates interested in hardware or
 software development will benefit from interactions with Electronics and Computer Science which is also within FPAS.<o:p></o:p></span></p>
