[ncl-talk] Segmentation fault 11 on MacOSX Catalina when running NCL

 Dear Rick,
Thanks for checking the script and data.
I actually have XQuartz installed. Just to clear all doubts, I have reinstalled and tried running the script again. It gives the same error message even with "png", "ps" and "pdf".
What could be the cause?
Thank you.
Best regards,Imoleayo

 Hi Imoleayo,
The plot runs just fine for me on my Mac. The fact that it's failing on your Mac but runs on Cheyenne, and the fact that the workstation type is X11, makes me think that perhaps you don't have XQuartz (the Mac X11 environment) installed on your Mac?  Perhaps try changing the workstation type to "png" and see if you get plots on disk. (aside - I don't recall a SEGV being a failure-mode for this situation, but...?)

XQuartz, if you decide you want/need it, can be obtained here:

Hope that helps...Rick

Dear Rick,Thanks for your swift response.
I guess the error occurs when NCL runs the "wks= gsn_open_wks (.......)" on my local machine because I tried the same script and data on my Cheyenne environment and it worked fine. Perhaps this issue is peculiar to MacOSX Catalina.
Please kindly find attached the script and the zipped data.
Thank you.

Well it's almost impossible to help without more information. What are you trying to do, what kind of file(s) are you using, and have you narrowed down the segment of your script where the SEGV occurs?

Regardless, NCL should not SEGV but fail more gracefully -- I'll look into it if you can send me your script and dataset(s) if they are not too large? I can't promise a fix, but I'll try to offer some sort of solution.
