[ncl-talk] read variable in hdf file

I did indeed receive the file, and yes, I'm seeing the same thing too.
Using various binary tools, I can tell that the file is HDF 4.2, and that
those symbols you mentioned do indeed appear in the file, but NCL does not
report them.  I don't have access to a debugging enviornment until I get
home this evening, but I will look into the issue further then.
