Barry,

For map tickmarks, there are limited number of customizations you can do.

However, when you are drawing a regional area like this, I recommend
setting:

res at pmTickMarkDisplayMode = "Always"

This causes NCL to use a nicer style of tickmarks for maps that includes
degrees and minutes.  Give it a try and see if you like the spacing better.

It shows a number of ways that you can use to customize map tickmarks.
