You can alternatively use the mask function, Example #6 on this page (https://www.ncl.ucar.edu/Document/Functions/Built-in/mask.shtml <https://www.ncl.ucar.edu/Document/Functions/Built-in/mask.shtml>) shows the case for 3-D or 4-D arrays.
