Try setting the resource for the map fill.

Res at mpFillOn =False

The grey is the land so this should do the trick.

*wkBackgroundColor  : (/1.,1.,1./)

But I would like to have the white background which I did not get in the following figure.

When I use X11, the plot does appear clearly.
