Referring to Table 7.19 in the MET V9.0 User's Guide I just wanted to
confirm my understanding of the statistic called "MSVE". The definition
indicates that this statistic is for speed and not direction. In METViewer
I'm plotting UGRD_VGRD VCNT_MSVE which I assume is the same statistic and is
a speed statistic and not a direction statistic. Could you confirm my
understanding is correct?

Thanks.

Subject: question about VCNT statistics MET V9.0 (UNCLASSIFIED)

John,

Yes, the VCNT_MSVE statistic in METviewer is the same as the MSVE
statistic from the VCNT line type. As described in Table 7.19, MSVE is
"Mean squared length of the vector di erence between the forecast and
observed winds"

And yes, you are correct in interpreting the vector length as being
equivalent to the wind speed, not direction.

Hope that helps clarify.

Thanks,
John
