  Initial Request
----------------------------------------------------------------

Hi Team,
I'm trying to Find specific text in the v9 MET User's Guide, but the format
seems to have changed? I tried Safari and Adobe Reader.
Seems like the pages are made of raster images, not text. I know I could
use the table of contents, but often the term I am searching for is not a
main heading and isn't in the TOC.
I would be great if the User's Guides could be in a format that may be
searched for text. That's mainly how I find things.

Thanks
Dave

Dave,

Hmmm, that's interesting. No, we did not intentionally make any
changes
between the previous version and this version that would result in the
change in behavior you describe. This is rendered using the Lyx
software,
and we did change from Lyx version 2.2 to 2.3. Hopefully, that
wouldn't
cause this issue. I definitely agree, you want to be able to search
the
PDF!

First, can you please give me an example of a search string that is
NOT
working the way it used to. For example, I opened the following
through my
Chrome browser:
https://dtcenter.org/sites/default/files/community-code/met/docs/user-
guide/MET_Users_Guide_v9.0.pdf

And I hit CNTRL-F to search for the string "ensemble-stat"... which
results
in 72 matches. And I just hit Enter several times to scroll through
them.
I also downloaded that file and viewed it through Acrobat on a Mac.
That
results in 74 matches for the "ensemble-stat" search string. Not sure
on
72 vs 74... perhaps one is case-sensitive and the other is not?

Do you see different behavior from this? Is there a search string
that
returns no results when it should?

Next, I wanted to mention that we're migrating our documentation over
from
Lyx to Sphinx for met-9.1. Here's an example of how the METplus
documentation is rendered on the web via Sphinx:
https://ncar.github.io/METplus/

I'm looking for a little feedback here:
(1) This results in multi-page HTML content with a search box. Is
that
sufficient?
(2) We do not currently have a PDF version of the METplus docs. Do
you
think that's OK, or do you see a need for a PDF?

Thanks,
John

Hi John - thanks for getting back .

I learned something new: My Safari and Preview applications don't
search
PDF text on my MacBook Air.
However, I just used Adobe Reader to open the MET Users Guide, and it
was
able to search it just fine. I thought I was opening it with Adobe
Reader
before, but it was actually Preview. Apparently that is the problem.
Neither Safari nor Preview search the document.

Sorry for wasting your time with that issue. Once you said it was
working
for you, I suspected it was my problem, not yours.

I looked at the new Sphinx user guide. I like the format in general.
I
wanted to learn about "llpnt" in the Ensemble Stat configuration file.
In
particular, I was curious why it only seemed to affect the observation
grid
not the verification grid. I wasn't able to find any basic information
about the definition of "llpnt" or the way it is specified in the
Sphinx
search results. I know I found this info before, but the answer wasn't
obvious to me using the Sphinx search tool.

To answer your question about METplus PDF, I don't need a PDF, per se.
I
haven't used METplus much yet.

Dave

Dave,

Sorry to send you down the wrong path there. The METplus
documentation
explains the python wrappers that automate calls to the MET tools.
The MET
User's Guide still exists, as-is. We have not yet migrated the MET
content
over to Sphinx yet. We're just starting that process. So the "llpnt"
details do in fact exist in the MET User's Guide on pages 69/70 (not
in the
METplus documentation).

I just sent you the METplus documentation link as an example of what
the
look/feel for the next version of the MET docs. Just wanted to get
some
user feedback.

Thanks,
John

No. - you said that. I didn't read carefully.
No complaints about the METplus Sphinx help pages. they look pretty
slick, with the expandable table of contents on the left and search
results
on the right.
