  Initial Request

Hello,
is MET equipped to handle FV3 evaluation? Maybe you also know if UPP
can convert FV3 nectdf output to GRIB.
Thanks,
Mariusz

Mariusz,

MET is equipped to compute all scores computed by EMC for FV3
evaluation
(other than vector wind statistics, which is being added this month).
The
Global Model Test Bed is using UPP to process FV3 but what I heard to
at
the Unified Forecast System (UFS) meeting at EMC yesterday was that
UPP
support is "nearly complete'. So I think it's "use at your own risk"
and
feed back problems you have via the UPP helpdesk. I'll forward you an
email
from one of the GMTB scientists that was recently sent to Hazardous
Weather
Tesbed staff. Based on the emails I'm seeing going back and forth,
UPP may
be struggling with the FV3 grids HWT contributors are setting up.
Look for
a direct forward from me in a few minutes.

Cheers, Tara

Mariusz,

As per your question sent to the UPP help desk ticket I opened:
does it mean that MET can take FV3 netcdf output, forget winds,
without it
being converted to GRIB by UPP?

Answer: MET has not be tested reading FV3 netcdf output directly so we
can't say for sure. Based on our experience with WRF netcdf, which
all we
can read is the WRF p-interp netcdf, I'd guess there will likely be
some
modification to either MET or the netcdf files that would be needed
but we
don't know how extensive until we try. I also think it would be very
beneficial to the community to figure it out once our helpdesk
resources
are replenished. We are running quite low until beginning of April.

Hope this helps,
Cheers, Tara

Tara,
so it looks like UPP conversion of FV3 to GRIB and subsequent
processing
with MET should be possible, even if not now, in the near future
(fall).
Right?

Mariusz,

Yes. I think it's fair to assume the capability will be availability
by
then.

Cheers, Tara
