Initial Request

Hi,
Can I create a derived variable and do model verification using that
variable? For example, I really want to verify the wind speed forecast. I
can create wind speed with my ugrd and vgrd that I pull out of the prepbufr
file (sqrt(ugrd^2+vgrd^2)), and can create wind speed from the GFS forecast
files a similar way. If I create wind speeds like this, can I use these
variables with the point-stat tool? If so, what do I need to do to be able
to do this type of verification?
thanks,
Roz

Roz,
MET already includes logic to automatically derived wind speeds on the
fly
from your model data. If you're passing it gridded GRIB1 or GRIB2
data,
just try requesting "name="WIND";" which is the GRIB abbreviation for
WIND. Likewise the PB2NC tool can derive wind speeds on the fly if
you
request it in the config file.
However, if you're generating NetCDF point observations yourself,
you'd
need to derive the wind speeds at that point.
Hope that helps.
Thanks,
John

Hi John,
Oh, that's cool. I didn't realize that. I am using PB2NC, so, I
could
request name=UGRD, VGRD and WIND. Then, I could verify u and v winds,
and
the wind speed, too, correct? Just have those 3 variables in both the
PB2NC and point-stat config files, correct?
Great! Thanks again!

Yep, that all sounds correct. Just let me know if you run into any
issues.
Thanks,
John
