  Initial Request
----------------------------------------------------------------

Hello,

I am trying to run madis2nc to process MADIS mesonet data. The mesonet files
processed correctly prior to 18Z on 14 Dec 2016. From 18Z 14 Dec 2016 on, no
data is being processed and the netcdf output files are empty. Here is the
command and output I get when running madis2nc:

~/data > /usr/local/bin/madis2nc MADIS/mesonet/20170318_1200

Hello Leela,

I see that you're having trouble with the madis2nc tool. That NetCDF
message sure isn't very helpful, is it!

Could you please post that madis file (MADIS/mesonet/20170318_1200) to
our
anonymous ftp site following these instructions:
  http://www.dtcenter.org/met/users/support/met_help.php#ftp

Hopefully, I'll be able to replicate the behavior you're seeing and
figure
out how to fix it.

Thanks,
John Halley Gotway

Leela,

Thanks for sending the sample file. I was able to replicate and fix
the
error you're seeing. We were failing to check the status of one of
the
NetCDF variables we were reading prior to accessing it's value. That
led
to the unhelpful error message.

Specifically, the error was in processing "precip1Hour" data which
isn't
present in that file.

This is basically a one-line fix in met-5.2. I've attached the
updated
version of madis2nc.cc which fixes this.

We're working on the release of met-6.0 right now, and I'm updating
the
code in a similar way in that version.

When we have time to post the next official set of patches for 5.2,
this
change will be included.

Thanks for letting us know about this!

John
