Dear friends:
Recently, I am trying to read radiance data of bufr format such as
“gdas.1bhrs3.t00z.20080405.bufr”,” gdas.1bamua.t00z.20080405.bufr”, so I
try to use
PB2NC tool to do it. But PB2NC tool needs a configure file like
“PB2NCConfig_G212”, but the “PB2NCConfig_G212” is not suitable for
radiance data of bufr format. Do you have any experience to tranfer radiance
data of bufr format to NetCDF format?

PB2NC can only read bufr data in a special NCEP format called PrepBUFR
(hence the prefix PB). I'm afraid PrepBUFR data
files contain only observation data for the meteorological fields
pressure, humidity, temperature, geopotential height,
and wind speeds. If you are able to extract the radiance data from
your bufr files into a text file, you could use the
MET tool ascii2nc to convert the data to a NetCDF format understood by
the other MET tools. You will have to perform a
simple conversion to the input text file format expected by ascii2nc.

Zhang,
I looked on the wiki page for BUFR, and there appear to be several
libraries available for handling BUFR data. For me,
the most promising was the perl library Geo::BUFR, but that is because
I am familiar with perl and I think it would be
easier than learning the NCEP fortran or ECMWF c++ libraries. I will
look into writing a simple BUFR data dumper using
the Geo::BUFR library and let you know if I am successful. If you are
familiar with c++, fortran or perl, I encourage
you to try building a reader using one of the existing libraries. If
you do so, we would appreciate it if you sent it
to use to post for other users to download.
Regarding your intended use of the BUFR radiance data, I assume that
you plan to use it to verify WRF model data? We do
not have very much experience doing this, but we have verified the
reflectivity output of the WRF post-processor UPP
radar simulator. I mention this only so that you consider how you
intend to use the observation data before you go to
the work to convert it.

Can you please send me one or more of the BUFR files from which you
would like to use radiance data? If the files are
larger than 2MB, please use the instructions at the following link to
upload them to our FTP site:
http://www.dtcenter.org/met/users/support/met_help.php#ftp
Another option is, if the BUFR files are available on the internet, to
give me the location where they can be downloaded
and I will get them myself. I plan to write a small perl script to
try to read the data. If you have any questions,
please let me know.
