John,

The best place to look for documentation about the magic string is
probably in the sample PointStatConfig file that is
located at $MET_BASE/scripts/config/PointStatConfig, where $MET_BASE
is the folder where MET is installed on your
system.  The comments above the fcst_field setting in that config file
describe how to build magic strings.

Please let me know if you have any other questions.
