  Initial Request

John,

Can we run pinterp via the MET tools package or does it need to be run as
part of the WRF-ARW model v3.0?

Note: I am not the person who is currently in charge of running WRF-ARW,
hence these questions pertaining to the issues at hand.

James,

The pinterp tool is not part of the MET package. It's a separate
utility for post-processing WRF-ARW output. You can find it listed on
the WRF-utilities page:
   http://www.mmm.ucar.edu/wrf/users/utilities/util.htm

Please direct questions about compiling/running pinterp to
wrfhelp at ucar.edu.

However, if you have the option, I'd really advise using the WRF Post-
Processor (WPP) utility as opposed to the pinterp tool. WPP can be
run on the output of WRF-ARW or WRF-NMM. It writes out GRIB
files, and MET does a better job handling the GRIB data than it does
handling the NetCDF output of pinterp. In particular, if you have
GRIB data, you can easily regrid it to whatever grid you'd like
using the copygb tool. To my knowledge, no such regridding tool
exists for the NetCDF output of pinterp. The grid-to-grid tools of
MET require that the forecast data and observation data be on the
same grid before verifying - so many users end up needing to regrid
their data in one form or another.

Details about compiling and running WPP can be found in Chapter 7 of
the WRF-NMM users guide:
   http://www.dtcenter.org/wrf-nmm/users/docs/overview.php

Again, please direct any questions about compiling/running WPP
directly to wrfhelp at ucar.edu.

Lastly, two other pieces of advice:
(1) If you haven't downloaded the latest patches for MET, I'd
recommend doing so:
   http://www.dtcenter.org/met/users/support/known_issues/METv3.0/index.php
(2) If you'd like some examples of compiling/running METv3.0, please
refer to our newly updated online tutorial:
   http://www.dtcenter.org/met/users/support/online_tutorial/METv3.0/index.php

Hope that helps.

Thanks,
John
